Been watching a listening to a few interviews from the day, and Hammill, live on Sky, made sure he had a word for Rimmo, great stuff! It's a shame Norman couldn't make it down there as he deserves to see a Barnsley team win at Wembley more than anyone around. But I'm sure he will have loved every minute of watching it on the box. Hammill also said it was the best day of his footballing life. Hopefully that, past experience and a straight word or two from Rimmo (the most loyal man in football!) may be enough to convince him to stay at Oakwell, given that the connection with him and the club seem to be very special. I wouldn't blame him one bit if he was to triple his wages elsewhere by leaving, but he won't be able to recreate what he has with Barnsley. Whatever happens, I'm going to savour and enjoy watching him for the next two months, and watching a Reds hero put in a match-winning performance and wonder goal like that at Wembley will live in the memory forever.
I don't think anyone would begrudge him moving on. He has a living to make. I really hope something can be done to persuade him to stay. He's already written his name large in the club's history. In fifty years watching he's one of the finest, most exhilarating players I've seen in a red shirt.
I think he'll sign a one year deal and leave in January. Fair play to him when he does eventually move on. Never thought when he left last time he'd back scoring the winning goal at Wembley for us in a cup final.
His goal at Wembley will be held up along with Clint Marcelle's goal against Bradford. Howard's at Liverpool and Barnard's v Huddersfield. Shame Oxford scored in the next minute. Would have been fantastic to watch 15 mins of BFC showboating.
Yes I thought that as well. If we could have kept them out for five minutes we would have started toying with them and probably scored one or two more. Not that Oxford deserved a 5-1 spanking but it would have been poetic justice for what they did to us at the Manor Ground in 1997. I love to watch us ping the ball around in triangles when we are out of sight score-wise. Not so good watching it when we are losing though.
We got hammered at the Manor ground i remember, but i reckon the team were still a bit hung over from winning promotion
I thought he was certain to be leaving us asap, but having read the interview in Sundays programme and seeing him after the game, i think he'll stay longer.
It may be that he's had a nibble at the big bucks at Wolves and if he's looked after his finances he may feel that being happy may be higher in his priorities ?
He's got a little one now hasn't he? Be nice if he settled in Barnsley and looked to enjoy his career at a club where he has played his best football and is loved by the fans.
I hope so I hope he looks also at ex players now in the coaching setup like Martin Devaney, Bobby hassel and Heckingbottom and end up staying here for some time. I also wouldn't hold it against him if we didn't go up and he wanted to go.
No I wouldn't either..... When he came back I was a bit dubious with what had gone on the last couple of years in his career but that York game he showed everyone what he was about and how much he loves this club and appreciated being given a chance to play again. He left us a boy and came back a man who's helped massively to turn our season around I just hope we can get a play off spot and see him tearing defenses apart at oakwell in the championship next season.
I was standing on the terracing with the Oxford lot with a "Us" supporting mate so in some ways the score was good, for my anonymity. We have not had a good record against Oxford away. On the day of the Bradford fire and the day Oxford went up to the 1st division we lost 4-0. I remember Maxwell quivering onto the field like a jelly to celebrate at the end. I think I have only seen the reds lose at Oxford. It was a great game and the right result in Sunday though. Another ambition realised. I could never have dreamed of seeing them win at Wembley and reach the Premier League or even the old division 1 back at the start of the 1966/7 season. Another play off win would be good though.
