Got the stats if we potentially had VI for the full season? Using his ppg average? Just curious, i cant remember how many games we had played before he came in. Cheers
we had played 7 games before VI took over, so we had 4 points. VI's teams have accrued 73 points in 37 games =1.97 ppg. This equates to 90.7 points over a season.
Totally different, in almost every way to me mate.... The gaffer was experienced before, we had a very very good squad. We were one of the favourites for promotion that year. This season, well we would have taken mid table obscurity at the start wouldn't we?
Agree we were falling back on the Play-Offs after failing to gain automatic last time. It felt like we were saving face.
I didn't feel that in 2000 mate, we had a very very good season. We played some of the best attacking, brilliant football I've seen us play. We unfortunately just missed out on Automatic and the rest is history as they say
The way we played that season made it worse. I was convinced we were going up automatic. We had a swagger about us. Then when we missed out on automatic I was gutted. We brushed Birmingham to one side and I thought we'd cracked it. I was devastated. I wouldn't be this time.
Agree with the attacking football from that year. We scored 88 goals over the course of the league season. Trouble was we conceded 67. This year we've been far better defensively than that season but the attack is nowhere near as potent.
No one was more devastated than me in 2000 playoffs, I can tell you. I still haven't watched the highlights from the Wembley game nearly 21 years later.... This time, I'm more relaxed, que sera sera as they say
Biggest problem in 2000 was the fact Ipswich had beaten us something like 8-0 over the two league games. Would've fancied us to beat Bolton, but not them.
Me neither. A brilliant season but I remember it for all the wrong reasons. This season totally different. Thrilled just to make the Play-Offs and no expectation either way and it's raised the profile of the club.
Agreed mate, and we've done it in budget, just to prove to everyone that you can get in the playoffs without breaking the bank and/or cooking the books
I know it's swings and roundabouts isn't it. How much do you trade attacking wise to shore up at the back. I think Valerien is still learning actually and I'm sure he's got more ideas to bring to the table
We had a great side then but Ipswich certainly had our number. Surprised they didn't get automatic promotion. They went on to finish 5th the next season in the Prem, only missed out on a Champions League spot on the last day.
I wanted Bolton in the Final. I was confident that we could have beaten Ipswich but they had the wood on us that season. I think events in the Final itself contributed to our own downfall though.
That season we were beaten home and away by Ipswich, drawn home and away to Bolton, won at home, but lost away with Birmingham. In fact, the defeat at St. Andrews had only been a couple of months earlier and the 3-1 scoreline definitely flattered us. In 2006, had we actually beaten, Brentford, Swansea or Huddersfield during that campaign? I'm overjoyed we're in the Play Offs, the opposition (although I respect all three) hold no fears for me and can't wait for them to start.
I definitely do. I loved Craig hignett and Bruce but didn't feel the excitement of that season. Think it was Dave Bassett and his former club. Enjoyed 2016 much more, incredible run to get in playoffs. Just knew we would win. By the time we to Wigan we were easily the best team in the division. This time is different, we are gate crashing the party, and I hope we pull it off. You Reds.
