Either Danny Wilson made more mistakes today than he did in the whole of his previous reign, or he decided that the team could not fight in two competitions at the same time and it should throw in the towel in the cup. I can see no other explanation. 1. He complained in the press about the team's general lack of pace and then left out Wiseman, our quickest player, not even giving him a place on the bench. 2. As if Wiseman's omission was not bad enough, he weakened the centre of our defense by playing Cranie at right back. Cranie was clearly unhappy at full back and the centre of the defense failed to read two long balls and were left slow to turn and lacking in pace to chase the Coventry players who ran on to them to score easily. 3. The system 4-1-4-1 left the centre forward isolated. The midfield four were too flat, so there was often no-one ahead of the passer causing the build up to be slow and ponderous, and there was no-one to get into the gap between the lines to try to support the centre forward. Result - long balls from back to front that the centre forward had not a hope of controlling and bringing others into play. 4. The first substitution was a small forward (Pedersen) for a big one (O'Grady). The system was kept the same so the service from the back was similar. Result, we had even less control of the game. 5. The second substitution was to remove a midfielder (Perkins) and replace him with another forward (Scotland). The service, which had struggled with 5 in midfield worsened, and Scotland was forced to drop into midfield in search of the ball. It was obvious, to me at least, that this result was inevitable. The team finished the game with Mvoto at centre forward and the keeper unable to kick because of his back pain. What a mess!
