probably the closest thing but dont forget

he served his political apprenticeship during the zenith of the territorial extent of the British Empire, as such he was just as much an imperialist as any Tory. This inflated prestige lead to the entrance of Britain into the fixed exchange rate system at an inflated level, they had to devalue since industry couldn't cope and that damaged the prospects of British industry for years thereafter.

Agreed. Putting the unions back in their box saved the country from anarchy.

Being an MP in the 1930s (particularly the opposition) does not make you an imperialist.

    no but he was

I think it was Morisson who said "the aim of Labour is to save the Empire" but obviously at the time he was working closely with Attlee as prime minister. If you look at their policies they certainly did not conform to the assumption that a colonial empire was incompatible with socialism. They did try to improve conditions but this administration was comitted to the maintenance of the empire and as such made concerted efforts to maintain the status quo; obviously popular support for independence was not yet at fever pitch in Africa but in Ceylon for example they made concessions such as offers of self government within the empire in order to maintain the structure.

    Can I ask?

What countries do you see as successful when you consider your extreme left wing views?

    None...

It is as simple as that. I think that for socialism to truly work, it has to be global and I accept that that is a major challenge.

I would consider that there have been achievements by countries who have practiced market socialism or socialism and these should not be understated, such as the NHS in the UK and the First World Health and Education Standards in Cuba.

Do you think that might be telling you something?

All what you ask for has been tried and it has failed.

I do agree on the NHS though, a fantastic example of which the British should be truly proud.

But Cuba - there are extremes of wealth and poverty there, so I would say that the famed education system is not delivering.
