They have committed more troops to Afghanistan despite the recent fatalities and the fact that we failed many years ago to tame the land and since then others have tried and failed, even the Russians with their vast manpower and arms capabilities gave up and went home.

Now he (Brown) has opened his big gob he has written more death warrants for our lads.

"The Russians with their vast manpower and capabilties".....

Are you sure you're not confusing the Russian army with the Russian vodka making industry? Very little military funding here, and no professional army to speak of means it's a disorganized rabble, full of 17 year old conscripts, often uneducated and always from poor backgrounds (the better off families chuck a bribe to make sure their kids don't have to do military service), using outdated equipment and having the **** kicked out of them at every touch and turn by alcoholic senior officers. Every operation these buffoons attempt to carry out ends in disaster - the Moscow theatre and Beslan school "rescues" come to mind. Vast capabilites I think not......

Why is the war in Afganistan in our National Interest

The Excuse is it would become a haven for terrorists and their training camps. So why not pull out and wait for it to happen and if this was a threat to our national security, bomb them and fire the poppy fields. At least we would have a target. Just now they are shadows in the night.

RE: Why is the war in Afganistan in our National Interest

Its already a haven for extremists training to kill, to be fair, im sure i remember that the threat to national security has already happened, hijacked planes killing thousands of innocents in the twin towers and on the flights themselves, plus the small matter of blowing up a few trains and buses in London.

Brown is no where near the right man, but something has to be done. As if we bomb them as suggested we would have a target, surely that would kill innocent people from their countries as well.

Glad it aint down to me to find the solution..........

    How about this?

If we stay in Iraq and Afghanistan then the troops over there are an easier target to aim at than people over here.

if taliban/ al-qaida was a national threat to usa or to us, why did they the government in USA let them in 5 months before 9/11? osama was all ready then in afghanistan, and they have bombed a USA embassy in Africa, and bombed USS Cole.

    Paraphrasing George Orwell's 1984.

The government in power has to have an "enemy" to stop the population focusing directly on it. Now that it's not the Dutch, Spanish, French, Boers, Germans, Russians, or Chinese, the "enemy" is "terrorists" in Afghanistan.
