We were moving house and our buyers have pulled out (4 weeks into it) , we're now down by £1000!

Absolutely guttered, do we have any chance of recouping this money, would like to think they'd have the decency to give us what we've paid out, doubtful they would though.

Is it more common than we think?

Sorry to say this Darton

but you are not entitled to anything back from them at all, all offers are made subject to contract, ie to an exchange of contracts, until this takes place either party can withdraw from the sale, for any reason and there is nothing the other party can do aqbout it,
do you know why they pulled out, was it an adverse survey?, has the sale of their own property fallen through?, have they been refused a mortgage etc?.
In reality approx 33% of agreed house sales fail to reach exchange, so unfortunatly it is very common,
a lot of solicitors now work, as do estate agents on a no sale, no fee basis

if you have exchanged contracts then yes, if not..you have no chance. The buyer for the missus house pulled out on the DAY we agreed to exchange AND complete its not common for this to happen as the buyer wanted to be in the house for a certain date sothe lawyers said we could do this.. we waited for him to come then got a call from the lawyers saying he had changed his mind and pulled out. thus ******* up a chain of 4. we were the last in the chain.

good job i didnt get my hands on him copper or no copper. ******

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

Happened to a mate twice...

And a lass at work three times.

Not much you can do about it if nothing's been signed apparently.

Where does the £1000 come from Darton Dan, survey? Solicitor? Estate Agents Fee? (E. Agentunlikely I guess). Giving backword is as common as muck unfortunately. Were you in a chain?
