DELIGHT AS HASSELL COMMITS TO CHAMPIONSHIP-BOUND REDS

Bobby Hassell

BARNSLEY FC are delighted to confirm that promotion winning full back Bobby Hassell has committed his long-term future to the Reds by signing a new one-year contract.

Bobby made 36 first team appearances last season as Andy Ritchie's side won promotion to The Championship with a thrilling victory in Cardiff against Swansea City in the Coca Cola League One Play Off Final. The 25-year-old was runner up in the Reds Player Of The Year vote and is an extremely popular figure around Oakwell.

Bobby joined the Reds in the summer of 2004 after making almost 190 appearances for Mansfield Town during eight years at Field Mill. He made his Barnsley debut on the opening day of the 2004/2005 campaign and has gone on to turn out 80 times for the Reds, netting two goals.

The Derby-born star has today agreed a new deal keeping him at Oakwell until the summer of 2007 and will be part of the Reds' assault on The Championship next season.

one year is not long term. looks like he is saying if we go down im going. hardly showing commitment by hassell only signing a one year contract.

    Hang on a minute.....

Why is it all down to Hassell? Maybe the club only offered him a one year deal, and thats why he was stalling? He maybe wanted longer as one year doesnt really secure his future?

    Just a thought, like.

    EXcellent news

Hassell is a quality player and it's great to see him commit to the Reds, even if it is just for one year.

Okay, one year may not seem like long term but at least it is commitment.

If anyone has a problem with that then you can go and kiss my @rse.

Hassell will be good for us this season, as he was last season.

    RE: EXcellent news

To be fair if we struggle hes going to find it hard to find another club just like the differance of opinions over Steve Foster. unless hes awesome all season he could end up at a league one side again if we dont stay up.

At least we dont have to spend any money to replace him other than higher than last season wages.

He's going to be right back next season.

will he hack it? I am worried after his performance in the play off final.

Shuker did exactly the same last season - sure he was the last one to sign - final piece etc etc

RE: He's going to be right back next season.

He picked up an injury and was struggling for most of the game at Cardiff.
He has been briliant this season for us which is why he was awarded runner up to player of the year!

    RE: What a relief!!!

Anyone thought about the consequences of giving him say a 4yr contract and then god forbid getting relegated at the end of the season. The club can no longer afford to be paying off players contracts like they used to, he may also want to keep his options open in the same scenario.
