Was told on Saturday That Bobby Hassell, McEveley, Grey, Foster and Edwards will all be released at the end of the season. All these are the top wage earners and Hassell and Edwards have been offered out on loan. I for one hope that this is not the case, I hope Bobby is given another contract I would love to see him get a testimonial.
****** innit? Thought i read somewhere that Hassell has another year or something. Can't imagine us getting rid of him, we need Sir Bobby in our defence IMO
Still the best defender at the club and still has a year left on his contract so Sir Bobby isn't going anywhere.
Sir Bobby and Rob Edwards both have another year each. The other three I can see being let go though.
Preece,McEverley,Potter,Butterfield,Doyle,Taylor and Gray i can see leaving. Hope to retain Hassell,Foster and O'Brien
Bobby is the best defender at the club. The results with/without him back up that theory. I wouldnt be surprised if he left though. I mean, would you be happy to play second fiddle to Wiseman?
I think he'd be in the starting eleven if he wasn't injured. Wiseman looks much better playing in front of Bobby.
I hope not in the case of Sir Bobby - he still has a year left on his contract and I doubt we would get anyone to take him and pay all his wages so we may as well use him - especially as he is still the best defender we have and no one can question his commitment to BFC - I would be really pissed off if we loaned him out because we didnt want to pay him anymore Dont care about the rest - but heard Gray would like to stay and would take a pay cut ( he will need to take one anyway) and if we can do a deal to keep him thats fair enough - still a good enough player to be part of the squad
Dunno who's in or out of contract but imho we need to hold on to Hassell, Foster and Gray for another season or two. If Tonge can get a run of games then I'd like to see him added.
Hope we give him another year Think he's a much better defender than Wiseman, although I wouldn't mind seeing Wiseman on the wing, ala Trippier last season, but then again, I'd rather see O'Brien on the wing when fit? Can't see us retaining many of the players out of contract at the end of the season, with Keith looking to build on a shoestring, hope O'Brien and Hassell are retained though.
Re: Hope we give him another year The key for me though, with any player, is that you can only afford to pay top wages to players who are considerably better than the others, or certainly are first choice. Whether you rate, say, McEverly or not, you can't justify a left-back who isn;t guarranteed to start being a top earner. By freeing up a considerable chunk of the wage bill Hill will have funds to bring in a better quality of player. Helpfully, the acadamy is also looking like providing some very cheap squad players. Which leaves all the players with two options, either go somewhere else who will pay you more or accept a lower wage. For players like Gray or Hassell I can't see someone paying them a high wage given their age. Bobby Hassell and Steve Foster have been two of my favourite Barnsley players over the last 5 years, model professionals, fully committed and, certainly in Foster's case, underrated. I would hope that they realise the financial situation, agree lower wages and stay, but if someone is willing to keep paying them their wages I would wish them all the best for fantastic service to the club. In terms of Gray it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he ends as a player/coach next year. Hill obviously relates him very highly and he assisted Flicker at Southampton too
Re: Hope we give him another year This batch of players will the the last of the big earners - and all established Championship performers. The thing that bothers me is whether or not that money WILL be available to recycle on the squad next season. Does Collins replace Foster? Does Golbourne replace McEverley?
Re: Hope we give him another year Well in theory you could have a more balanced squad. We can only afford Collins and Goldbourne because we have McEverley. I don't mind if they're first choice, but at the moment too many high earners aren't first choice (ie Rob Edwards). That's what gives me hope. Lower league players alongside players like Drinkwater can work as we've shown. We need to ensure that come next season the higher wage earners are on the pitch AND in more influential positions than full back!
