I haven't listened to the interview, but I've read the transcript, and I've listened to Flicker's interviews on Talksport et al where he was a little non-commital. I think that the board have got the wrong end of the stick about Flicker's reasons for not being sure about "putting myself through that again". Don has intimated that Flicker will get paid far more money etc, but that was never the reason why he wasn't sure. He was clearly referring to the fact that the board need to ensure we have enough investment/flexibility to be competitive in this league. It's clear from last season that we tried to bring in numerous players who had shown an interest in signing, but the deal broke down at the last minute during contract negotiations. The players then went on to do well at other clubs and we were left to fight with what we had. I don't know why this was, but it sounds like Flicker is asking the board to trust his judgement when he tells them a player is worth £x in wages. We've been stung in the past with dodgy signings (e.g Davey, Robins), but Flicker and Hill have had a great eye for a player since being here. He's also referred to Dave Brailsford (GB Cycling coach) on many occassions, and how the attention to minute detail is the key to success. This includes better away coach provider, hydro-therapy sessions to aid recovery, better hotel accommodation, training days away from Oakwell. Clearly he wants the board to back his plan to improve the minute details or he could walk away. If Flicker thinks this is a good way to spend the budget, how can we deny him? His results speak for themselves. I'm hopeful he'll stay, and I think he will - I just hope the board realise what he means and that he's not bothered about lining his own pockets.
I got the impression pre season had been discussed, Flitcroft probably planning a Spain trip and assume Don has given green light.
Don't forget who Flickers best mate is..and the relationship he had with the club and its fans at the end...The best thing he could have done for Keith apart from walk away with him...is what he as done in keeping Barnsley up with more or less the same team as his mate brought to the club.. And don't forget Flicker only go the job by default...3rd choice....what i'm saying is flicker don't own the club nowt, its the other way round...Flicker could walk away and not look back, and why not if its going to be a struggle
That can be said for most of our recent managers, but they have all wasted money on bad signings, Mido, Rooney, Edwards, Collins??
Flitcroft said the board financially backed him by trying to sign Dawson (WBA) and Butterfield. It was the players clubs who wanted them to sign elsewhere.
It would not surprise me if both teams were in the same place at the same time, played a friendly together out there and some loan deal(s) came out of it
