I am wanting to get a fire extinguisher for home use, could anyone recommend what type would be the best for home use. I have a good basic working knowledge of fire fighting... the armed forces drums it into you... but I have been out a good while and things will have probably evolved somewhat. My reason is that last night our microwave stuck on... it did not 'DING' it just kept on going ( with just some rice in it) I was upstairs and the wife was watching 'The Voice' I smelt a very nasty burning smell... opened the kitchen door to find it filling with smoke. Turned the appliance off at the wall and pulled the plug... then wrapped the thing in a wet/damp towel and put it in a safe place in the back garden. so today I thought it was maybe a good idea to get a basic fire blanket and extinguisher in, am wanting summat that can fit the bill for all kinda domestic fires ABC I believe it is... so any advice will be most welcome.

    oils /fats..

no not really , we use an air fryer, we use steamers, crock pot, micro wave and a halogen oven too.. we use an electric wok... But deep fat etc is never used at all. My wife uses the oven for cake making

then I would agree dry powder or an ABF extinguisher. And if you leave any appliances (dishwasher, washing machine etc) on when you're out - make sure you close doors
