The problem with syndicates . . .

. . . is that if you reduce (your share of) the payout to the level that you can get paid out by the bookies then you're better off choosing an accumulator bet on the horses at random each week than playing the lottery. It's only worth doing the lottery where the returns to odds are so poor if it's because you want to win more than the bookies can payout (quarter or half a million, if I remember correctly).
