BARNSLEY manager Simon Davey has hit out at Southend United after the Roots Hall club made a 'derogatory' offer for striker Paul Hayes just hours before the two teams met in last week's FA Cup Third Round replay at Oakwell.

Paul was missing from the squad that travelled to Luton Town last weekend although Simon has insisted that the decision was made with the best interests of the player in mind and the former Scnuthorpe United hitman will not be leaving the Club on the cheap.

Speaking exclusively to www.barnsleyfc.co.uk, Simon said: "Southend United came in with an offer for Paul just hours before we were due to play them in the Cup last Tuesday.

"Their actions have unsettled Paul greatly - he is a Southend boy and has made no secret of his desire to move back down South over the last 12-months or so. Paul's mind was not right after they made their bid last week and it was in his best interests that he did not play at Luton.

"There is no way whatsoever that this Club will allow Paul - or any player - to leave unless it is in the best interests of Barnsley FC. Southend's bid was nowhere near our valuation of Paul".

Paul joined the Reds in the summer of 2005 after agreeing a deal with the Club after his contract expired at Scnuthorpe United. Following a tribunal, the Reds paid the Glanford Park outfit a significant six-figure transfer fee to secure his services.

The 23-year-old striker was an integral part of the Barnsley squad that won promotion last season and has featured regularly in the starting level in the Championship this season. He has hit 18 goals in 84 first team games for the Club.
