Of course the O's chairman is tight and did not actually want to sign Hayes

It was all a ruse to kid the fans MARTIN LING'S efforts to bring in a striker were again frustrated late on Wednesday night when the O's failed to agree personal terms with Barnsley's Paul Hayes.

A substantial six-figure fee was agreed with the Yorkshire club for Londoner Hayes, but following six hours of ultimately unsuccessful negotiating, the deal was called off at 8.30pm.

After a similar knockback from Torquay's Jamie Ward, whose excessive wage demands blocked his possible transfer from the Gulls after the two clubs had agreed a deal for the player, Ling described the last two days as his most frustrating in management.

He said: "It's a very frustrating situation, but after calling off the search at 8.30pm, I didn't want to bring a lesser player in on loan for the sake of it before midnight.

&quot; The standard of players we have been in for over the last month shows the levels we are aiming for and the bids we have made show the lengths we are prepared to go to bring them to this football club.</p>

    Get the picture?

    Wonder if the transfer in

was dependent on this going through?
