I coach a grassroots team under 9’s in the Barnsley league

Just received confirmation from the fa any player intentionally heading the ball next season will result in an indirect free kick to the opposition

Also no throw ins allowed got to be passed in or dribbled

    Thoughts ?

    Agree with the heading.

Whilst I know it’s part of the adult game - common sense says it ain’t good for them at a young age.

Throw ins - should be throw ins. What’s the point of kick-ins?

What's the reasoning behind the throw ins?

I assume because you head the ball a lot more from throw ins to control it than you would with a typical pass ? Don't mind the no heading rule but I agree throw ins a bit daft.

It’s a dribble in or kick in rather than a throw. Presumably to stop them flicking it on with the head.
For me a flick on header isn’t the issue, it’s heading back the Val style long balls and attacking fast moving free kicks and corners, but if it reduces potential damage to our kids we surely can’t be against it?
My lad will be under 14 and has only just really got to grips with a defensive clearance type header, but I’ve seen him head a few and winced for him.
There’s no banning of junior boxing head shots though so guess it’s a bit inconsistent across sports.

I do agree with it, does make you wonder what heading will look like when this generation do go professional! Some of the best goals in history have been scored with a header too, diving headers especially, so perhaps will have an impact going forward too, especially with set pieces obviously.

I don’t think there are plans to ban it completely it’s only up to under 11s at the minute. In theory it should make them all better with their feet and stop head tennis, which can only improve the quality of players.

When the game was first codified, there were no throw ins, the ball was kicked from the point where it went out.

I'd be very surprised if they don't ban it up until maybe U15/16 though eventually bud. Silver linings hopefully means we'll have young players much quicker and better with their feet with how often it'll be on the floor. Team full of Bellinghams, Stones & Fodens would be nice ey!

    In theory, yes.
I already believe the technical ability of the current 13-16s will put the majority of current players to shame by the time they are playing professional first team football.
I’d rather watch players dribble with the ball at their feet or play quick passing attacking football than hoofing it up for a centre forward to knock on a header anyway.

Don't agree about throw ins but I can see the logic of restricting heading the ball.

I like to see both. All passing gets boring too!

Think it was Wenger who proposed kick ins instead of throw ins as it’s supposed to speed the game up.
Believe there was a Dutch league trialling it.

I don’t think professional players know how to take a throw in. Almost all are foul throws but refs seem happy to ignore them.
It’s football so why not a kick in?

In other news two of my friends have been out to Switzerland as guests of UEFA to test different formats of Walking football. Wouldn’t be surprised if it is the start of the creation of universal rules of the game instead of the various incarnations there are currently.
