A family i know through work are struggling to find the support they need for one of their sons (in his 20s) Having been fobbed off/ offered inappropriate help the are now looking for 1:1 counselling which they are willing to pay for if that is the only option. I suspect that they may struggle to do this for long but just need to get help. Just wondered if anyone on here has any recommendations / advice?
Turning point Wakefield However it does require a doctors referral. Plus was a few months wait before it started. Did 1 to 1 CBT treatment over the phone. Worked perfectly for me.
Don’t need a referral from the doctor for turning point - https://talking.turning-point.co.uk/wakefield/refer-yourself/ They were pretty hasty about getting back in touch too. There are multiple charities out there that do support for people, Samaritans as well all know - CALM has an anonymous helpline open. If it’s something particularly urgent you can call the crisis team for the area. In general, GP’s are a bag of so and so when it comes to mental health - you wouldn’t go to an all you can eat chinese buffet if you fancied an Indian takeaway.
He won't be eligible for turning point if GP registered in Barnsley- needs to refer self to Barnsley IAPT @fired or find private counsellor via counselling directory. If you need any further advice happy to help
You can't access that service or any other NHS commissioned service unless your GP is registered in that area. You are right though you can refer yourself, but only if GP in that area (they will check).
It's horrible having bad mental health. I've suffered with anxiety and depression for well over 12 years now ,usually good at disguising it. I have found MIND very good in the past. Hope he gets the help soon.
Andy Man’s Club is something a lot of friends I know are recently starting to go to, if that’s something the fella can try if there’s one nearby it could be of help. been very beneficial for my sibling since the loss of a parent
Friend of mine runs something called Project14. Might be a good starting place and will have contacts.
I think they know about Andy’s Man Club. My understanding is he’s struggling with “group” situations and is looking for some 1:1 help. I will pass on all of the details above though in case they haven’t seen any of them.
Apologies for any misleading information i have given. Just gave my response based on my personal circumstances. Hope he gets the treatment needed.
IAPT in Barnsley offers a number of workshops and resources. As others have mentioned AndysManClub have two groups in town I think. Also try to contact MIND and CALM maybe
Heyup, If Barnsley based and the local GP is supportive an SPA referral (Single Point of Access at Lundwood) may help. Worth looking up if circumstances are as above. Regards. Edit: Just noticed you did say Barnsley in the title. D'oh!
If it's just for talking therapies as suggested by OP it's much quicker to refer self directly to Barnsley IAPT than jumping through all the hoops of GP appointment and via SPA. (ex SWYT employee/ IAPT therapist).
Crisis team at Kendray hospital if things get really bad. We've used them for my son, he's still under their care for counselling. I feel for your friends family, tough tough times for them.
I feel for them too - i don’t know the details but I think they are looking at paying for something they can barely afford, just so he can do 1:1 counselling. The group sessions he’s been offered are too much for him. Such a shame that it seems so many young people are struggling. I’m going to pass all the info on but I suspect they know most of it. Just hope the kid pulls it around.
Both my wife and myself been in some dark situations with our son. Both of us have saved his life. The mental scars that it leaves are scary, but having our son alive makes it worthwhile.
So sorry that young people like your son can’t find the help they need. I hope things improve for him.
