help home network question

    if just want to connect 2 computers together do i have to go through a router or can i just connect them using a cable. they both desktops on the same operating system (xp). any help would be much appreciated.

    You don't need a router, but to connect 2 PC's together make sure you use CROSSOVER network cable as opposed to the normal patch cables.

    cheers for that. one last thing the cable i have is a fastCAT5e is that a crossover cable. oh as well i've got a router for sale never been touched and maybe a cable. looks like i've just wasted 80 quid. thanks roundsman.

    No. A Cat5e cable is a patch cable.
    With 2 of those and a router you can connect up. There may be another one in the box with the router. Most ship with one, ore is that the one you're talking about?

    Just wire both PC's to the router and use the Network Setup Wizard in XP.

    i do have another cable. my problem really is the router it is a adsl modem router and i'm have no luck with it at all so i thought there may just be a simpler way.
