I know this is a football forum but they always seems someone happy to help. I suffer from bad Acid Reflux -can anyone recommend anything for it. And what causes it .
I suffer from it too. Any antacid products will do the job, the liquid products better but a bit more expensive. As for what causes it, it can be different for different people. Looking after your diet can help. Avoid food that set it off, trial and error. Some unusual stuff can start it, pastry is one of the worst for me, and the green skin on cucumber is quite common, I always cut it off now.
Cheers for that is apreciated - Might be me looking too much into this but i seem to get it while at work - could coffee or tea set this off. Thanks for the information again
go see yer Doctor and askhim to try you on a tablet called omeprazole (Losec) it reduces the activity of the acid production. You take just the one dose of a morning and it covers you all day. I suffered too but that stuff has sorted. There is an operation that can be done which tightens the sphincter muscle of the oesophagus, but it can cause problems.
Re: go see yer Doctor and askhim to it's called a nissen fundoplication I had it done last year, after 12 years of suffering, from it, they don't tend to do the operation that often and do it in bad case's. I was on 40mg on tablets and even that didn't work, Gaviscon is a good quick fix, but depending on symptom's I would go see a doctor if it's been lasting for a while as further investigation might be needed, you could have may reason for this, not just dietary reason, I have a hitius hernia, peptic ulcer, and ended up burning away my lower sphincter. also, if you take pain killers be careful on which one's you take, they can make it worse
Re: go see yer Doctor and askhim to Deffo go to your docs, as said previously, could be caused by many things. I had the camera down the throat and thankfully nothing untoward was discovered, the doc came to the conclusion that I was just producing too much gastric acid. He put me on Omiprozole, job sorted, that was years ago, I only take them now on an as needed basis. You will find that certain foods will cause you problems, pastry is bad for me as is full fat milk, and yes, coffee is very bad, try drinking water only at work and see if that makes a difference but if it continues don't mess about, get to your docs, it could be a symptom of other underlying problems.
Re: go see yer Doctor and askhim to Thanks everyone for such great advice. I have booked myself in the doctors on Friday . thanks again
Re: go see yer Doctor and askhim to Definitely get to the quack...I suffered from being 14 yrs old..eventually I was sent for the camera down and found to have the helicobacter pylori...a bacteria that lives in the stomach and causes acid, ulcers and other associated problems,a course of antibiotics and a tablet of Losec,(although I'm on a cheaper version now called Rabeprazole Sodium),and its much better ,I used to do a box of 48 Rennies a week,I don't need them at all now.
I have acid reflux and it can be awful. I don't get it in the day so I don't think mines triggered by food. I also have a very strict diet and cut out all potential acid reflux triggers. I have the top of my bed elevated by 6 inches as this supposed to help as it keeps your oesophagus higher than your stomach. I make sure I don't eat a meal at least 3 hours before going to bed. Do you get acid through the night or do wake with it in your mouth on a morning? Every morning when I wake it's in my mouth and my throat is burning, it even gets into my sinuses. I'm on Omeprazole but it doesn't always work so may need to try a different PPI. If over the counter meds aren't working for you I would try a H2 blocker like Zantac/ranitidine first as PPIs like omeprazole and lansoprazole are strong meds and it's very hard to come off them if you've used long term. When you stop them you can get awful rebound acid from withdrawal and lot of people end up staying on the meds to avoid this, of course the doctors don't warn you of this when they prescribe them. If its happening regular your doctor might refer you for an endoscopy to check for the cause or to see if there's any damage to the oesphogus. You really should try lifestyle changes first as this might be the cause. Here's a link for foods that are the main cause of acid reflux and a list of safe foods http://www.gastrolondon.co.uk/acid-reflux-diet.html
i only get acid reflux at night too, some nights i wake up and all you can feel is the burning throat. ive been able to remedy this of late by taking a glass of water to bed and putting in a alka seltzer just one tablet. just before i sleep i drink the water and it seems to have done the trick. also i try not to eat after 7 pm,which helps too.
I always have a bottle of water at the side of my bed as the acid wakes me up several times in the night. Thanks for the alka seltzer tip I'll try that. I too don't eat at night. I make sure I have my last meal at least 3 hours before bed.
you can also just put the alka seltzer in and drink the water as normal, but in the morning dont drink it all you will taste is salt errrrrrrrrrr
also i found if i eat gluten free things i dont get reflux as much either. i only discovered this because during passover(my wifes jewish) were not allowed bread we eat matza which is like a cracker, the ones she purchased were gluten free and all the week of passover i never had reflux once.
I've tried that and it didn't make much of a difference but I have cut out all dairy as that seemed to make IBS and reflux worse.
