A friend is currently on the phone to me. He has recently got a new pc - running Vista. He's not on the net yet, and has barely run the pc at all. But he now has a problem. The pc was working fine, but now all that is on his desktop is the recycle bin. He says its running in recovery mode but doesn't know why. Im no expert on computers, but know enough to get by. Can anyone help please?

    Seriously mate, PCs are crap

Apple are now bringing out Imacs at decent prices. I've had a 17inch Imac for bout four months. It's never crashed once and they can't get viruses. Check out the adverts on www.apple.com for a real laugh!!!

I could nver go back to PCs again. Once you've experienced a mac for a while, you could never go back to PCs, they're just too slow, inconsistent and unreliable! And from what I hear about VISTA, it's just disaster after disaster!!!

    APPLE APPLE APPLE!!!

Of course they get viruses (or virii)..

... and spyware, and all other **** you get on other os's.

BUT (not wishing to hi-jack the thread), what sort of mac would you recommend for video editing (something a MAC is good at)?

All depends on your budget mate, what we talking?

And how much into video editing are you? The programme everyone's using at the moment is called Finalcut, but it costs a lot if you buy a legal version. Most people seem to just buy it off e-bay or download a copy and a registration code, so if you don't have a problem doing that then you aren't talking much.

As for the machine itself, a imac is more than capable of doing good video editing work (certainly better than any PC). It'd probably be worth contacting Apple and having some extra RAM fitted though, just to speed things up a bit...

All depends on your budget though. If you've a little more cash, I'd go for one of the big power mac things they do.

RE: All depends on your budget mate, what we talking?

Cost of software is not a problem. Hardware costs ... I dunno, want to have a look at what they cost.
I've got some family video on DVD which I have been trying to edit down for on and off for a few years. My PC just wasn't built for this, and the software I have tried either crashes, has crap GUI, too resourse hungary, or produces crap quaility/out of synch issues or the end result is far too big. You know, it maybe me that's not cut out for it rather than the pc itself. Thing is I have to compare cost against will I use it/get bored of it ... and I'm a true PC man, so as good as Mac's are, they still only have one mouse button!

Does it reboot into Safe mode every time,

If he closes down from safe mode and switches off the power to the system for at least 2 minutes, then reboots does it still go into the same mode.

Is He SURE its safe mode and not the Vista interface, if he right clicks on the round windows flag where start used to be he can alter the settings to look like ME etc.. as this part is different again from XP and the way you get to programmes and utilities is different.

No, they actually don't. There are no self propagating OSX viruses in the wild that are able to spread to your computer through open ports. There are about 2 proof of concept viruses that you could choose to find, download and enter your administrator password in order to run, however these potential exploits have both been patched since their release leaving no need for anyone running OSX to purchase antivirus software.

Again, not true. The laptop range ship with a single button trackpad, but the current default for all desktop Macs is the Mighty Mouse, which has 4 customisable buttons.

I like Macs and when its time for a new comp i'll probably get one, if they are as you say, affordable.

The reason why there aren't viruses for Macs is purely down to popularity - PC's are more popular therefore the morons who write viruses do so for PC's.

Oh yes, absolutely, there'd be no kudos at all in writing the first Mac virus. That doesn't appeal to anyone!

    Yes he's sure mate....

but what worries both of us is the fact that the ONLY icon on his desktop is the Recycle Bin. Surely this isn't right?

Isnt there something called a sidebar that he should have? Has he tried right clicking on the desktop to see if there are other options?

The first setup there is on record in system restore is yesterday, but the problem was there yesterday and taking it back to then would be pointless.
