A site runs a monthly programe of music and although I can listen to it, how can I record it for later or to burn a CD. I could plug a tape recorder into my sound out plug but is there a programe that allows direct recording from the computer, either wave or MP3 ?

I have Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS and the recording software that comes with it enables you to do just that.
Try the Creative web site for more info.

The one I use is Total recorder

    from http://www.highcriteria.com

It costs less than a tenner has lifetime free upgrades and records in just about any format definitely .wav or MP3 are supported along

Does everything you want - there may be free ones around but I am not aware of anything as good or easy to use
