and I got it wrong.

A defender is in the penalty area when he hears a whistle from the crowed and thinking it was the ref who blew he catches the ball.

Why does the ref give? (rulez)

In his own area? A penalty, although it may depend if the ref also hears the whistle.

Does that apply if the ref doesn't hear it? What's to stop a player catching a ball coming into the area then and then claiming he heard a whistle?

I think the word 'defender' gives you a clue

Which outfield player on the team it is is irrelevant. (banghead)

RE: I think the word 'defender' gives you a clue

So defenders for example can not come up for corners and free kicks, thus find themselves in the other penalty area? That's why I asked, because the question wasn't clear enough.

    You're still missing the point

The position of the player is irrelevant.

Do you think in either penalty area it depends if the player who picks it up is a centre half or a forward?

Why am I trying to explain anything to you?

RE: You're still missing the point

Ok I shall try explaining it to you one last time.

Defender in his own box picks it up: Risks giving away a penalty.
Defender goes up for say a corner and picks it up: Risks a free kick to the opposition.

    ARRRGHHHHHH !!!!

When a player is in the opposition box he is an attacker.... any player in the box trying to prevent a goal is defending and therefore is a defender. It doesn't matter what his normal position is.

Tell me you're kidding please !!!!

    RE: ARRRGHHHHHH !!!!

I do know that. My point is that the circumstances behind it would be different depending on the penalty box the offence took place in.

NO! What it means in that context when it says "a defender picks up the ball in the area" it means a defending player, rather than his actual playing position!

    are you seriously retarded?

Or do you just pretend you are?

Don't worry, i've reworded it just for you. Hope it helps you understand what you failed to grasp after it being explained many times.

"A player is defending in the penalty area when he hears a whistle from the crowed and thinking it was the ref who blew he catches the ball."
