Despite the fact that Morgan left us and went to one of our rivals, he has over the years that he has been at Sheffield United still maintained a strong degree of affection from a significaqnt number of Barnsley fans. This probably has been enhanced by his unresearved support of the Club especially during the Cup run. Now that has well and truly been blown away. His actions have made him a pariah at the club that undoubtedly he has some affection for. Although it is in now way adequate, his new status in the eyes of Barnsleyi fans at least will be a punishement of some kind. The attack (not challenge) on Hulme was in my opinion quite deliberate. Though I believe that there was never an intent to cause the degree of damage that he did, it is very evident that he intended to make his precence felt. I hope for the sake of football that something is done to ensure this guilty act of barbarism does not go unpunished. Morgan's stature in the eyes of most Barnsley fans has no doubt been irreparably shattered. Small comfort this will be for Hume and his family. All our thoughts go out to them and the hope that he will recover completely. All in all a sad sad situaton for football, for Barnsley FC and for Morgan himself - though I think he is no doubt getting everything that he deserves. It is likely however that this crime will not get the full punishment that it deserves. Those capable of doing somehing about it - the FA, the police - are likely to bottle out on the issue. I think that a financial consequence should be impossed on both Morgan and Sheffield United, and indeed any other player and club that allows such behavoir to take place. Money talks unfortunately. Then we may get a situation where it is safe for sportsmen to play the game that we all love in relative safety. A sad sad situaton - clearly something must be done - but almost certainly will not be.
