    They are World Champions because.....

    ... the trophy was originally supplied by the World Newspaper in New York.

    That's why they are the "World" champions.

    No it wasn't. You are getting mixed up with the myth about baseball's World Series and even then it isn't true.

    It's just one of those weird insular things, they'll do the same with the NBA basketball champions as well and they aren't even the only ones who play.
