This is my first post people so go easy A few things concern me about Keith at the minute every time I hear him interviewed or read articles he has done I get the gnawing feeling that his ambitions are way more than Barnsley FC and he see's us as a mere stepping stone to bigger and better things, not that am saying that there is anything wrong in that but what ambition as fans do we have as to where we believe he can take us and what would we consider successful?, mid table, avoiding relegation, play offs or higher? Personally speaking on the wage structure and bugdet we have just keeping us in the division is amazing in comparison to the majority of the teams in the league, however at what point does he feel that with the financial restrictions he cannot go any further, don't get me wrong some of the football this season has been sublime and am sure a large number of clubs would swap their position for ours in a shot however on the flip side some of it has been awful (the Ipswich game a case in point) So I guess my points are what would we as fans consider as acceptable from Hill and his team? and at what point do we have to admit that Hill has done a good / bad job
Ahhh apologies "thereev" and I thought this was a free country and a free forum oh well I guess I didnt realise I had to ask your permission
I would say that anything over 9 points more than last season would be deamed overachievement, anything up to 9 points would be acceptable, anything less than last season would be unacceptable. Keith's remarks before the Leicester game were telling talking about Nigel Pearson, along the lines that there is no loyalty to football managers and he did the right thing leaving Hull for the big money available at Leicester. Keith Hill will leave Barnsley for a bigger club I am sure, I just hope its not for another season or two, I can see us getting in the play-offs at some point if he stays.
Don't worry Steve, you just need to apply for a position in the BBS Clique and they'll be all over you like a cheap suit.
To be fair to Hill he does get asked a lot of questions about the budget and how we are doing. Personally I think he's doing a great job and will be the one to take us forward - I actually enjoy games now whereas before I didn't. Just my opinion like.
Simple answer is noone knows. We're always going to be a stepping stone for players, managers etc. Much rather we were that than a last cheque for washed up gaffers and ex Prem pros which I think we were in danger of becoming. But to get where Hill wants to be he's got two options - get us promoted on a shoe string or over achieve to a point where a team like Leicester, Derby, Leeds, Cardiff etc give him a shot. Either way it's a win win for us. Acceptable for me this year is staying up. Simple as. Even if we do go down this year I don't think Hill will have done a bad job. Getting to 36 points at this stage of the season is an achievement in itself considering I expected us to finish on 20 points max and be down by Xmas.
I may have a stutter yeah I am after all in the presence of the legend "thereev" (well in your mind anyway) also am a bit puzzled as to how you welcome new people onto the board, do you chase off visitors to your home with a pitchfork shouting "gerroff my larrnnd" just a thought like hope this helps (-:
He's the board gimp, Steve. Also known as 'The Bookie's Friend', due to his spectacularly poor tipping service. Just ignore him - most folk on here won't bite.
Ya what. We've lost butterfield (until end of season) Hammill and Shackell (permo) and cut the budget. If we finish on 55 it's very good. If we finish on more points that would be amazing. I think we'll have an amazing season has I think we will get 60 points and have done since September.
I have been going to Oakwell for 40 odd years, I personally believe that this is going to be about as good as it gets. We have no wealthy backer throwing pots of money in and gates that are pitiful for the division. I`m not depressed about it, ive seen it all before. Other fans have to wake up and realise this and face the truth. I have, its how it is, its all part and parcel of being a TRUE RED,. nice first post by the way.
We have done it before on a small budget though - to be fair we've never had that much money and have done ok
You are more than welcome really Mr S Bfc..............with the amount of clowns on here....anyone who can string more than two sentences together is a rarity. Hope this helps.
First of all, welcome Steve. Enjoy the ride! Everything I've heard from Keith Hill suggests he's here for the long haul, results not withstanding. He appears to have both short and long term plans for the club. There are times when his comments annoy some folk, but they very rarely bother me, personally. In the short term, taking into account the reduction in budget made available to the manager for the current season, avoiding relegation could be regarded as a success. That reduction brought about the departure of Mark Robins, who either felt he couldn't, or wouldn't, achieve the safe finish he'd managed the previous two seasons with those restrictions in place. I believe we'll finish around 14th and collect about 58/60 points. We were to manage that, I feel it'd be a very impressive achievement by Hill & Flitcroft. If, at the end of next season, we finish in the top half, or actually push for a play off place, then I expect clubs with a bigger budget than us (be they from the Premier League or Championship) will come and try to entice him away.
Dont completely agree Kev Yes he is putting in longer term plans - and he is on a rolling 1 year contract but I am sure he does see us as a stepping stone - nothing wrong with that as we will only be a stepping stone if he does a good job here - but lets say this year he does the unthinkable and gets us to the playoffs or just outside. Bigger clubs than us may be sniffing round and it would be hard for him to turn down a club like Leeds or even someone like Bolton. Though I think he would only go if he thought he would be allowed to manage as he wants
Re: Dont completely agree Kev Its well documented that at Rochdale Keith constantly went on about a 7 year plan with them....
I didn't say he doesn't see us as a stepping stone, Dave I merely stated that he appears to be planning both short and long term for the club. It'd be difficult to imagine what more he could do as proof of commitment, within practical and financial reason. Were he to be successful, we as a club would benefit and, hopefully, we could part on good terms with both gratitude and best wishes.
