Appalling tragedy - ground with no safety certifcate - police getting it totally wrong - families of the 96 totally vindicated for their protests. It is said over 40 lives could have been saved - what is the basis for this statement?
fekking council's fault for letting game go ahead. **no doubt that was allowed cos all the councillors had free tickets................. **allegedly of course and only a matter of opinion
Thanks Mr C but there is a lot of stuff to read there....... have you read it? ....and does the feckless council cop for any blame? they ought to imo. thanks
I haven't read it all, no. But I don't feel the need to express opinion on the tragedy, it's complex enough without my two-penneth. It is a public document, there to be read if folk require answers. It's better to read it before running off at the gob with un-informed drivel though. Few have, obviously.
Re:What was known - from report What I find strange about this section is that there appears to be no mention of the fact that at the other end of the ground Forest fans were in on time and with no obvious problems. Could comparisons have been made? What factors were different to give such a different outcome? As you would expect, the emphasis was on the Liverpool end but it seems remiss that this is not recognised as "what was known". Well, maybe it is in there and I just haven't seen it. Can anybody tell me otherwise?
in over simplified terms... The basis is that the view taken at the time by the police and original coroner was that all the people who died died instantly from the trauma of the crush so no attempt was made to recussitate them they were just left for dead In fact although this was true for over half the victims 41 of them did not die immediately and had potentially recoverable injuries and with fast emergency aid all the 41 had the potential to be resucittated - its unlikely all would have been but had there been a fast response and first aid administered instead of the police concentrating on containing the trouble makers its almost certain some would have survived at least one lad was definitely still alive in the Mortuary and still no attempt was made to save him
Re: What was known - from report Its long been recognised that the design of that side of the ground was a major factor and there were problems with the leppings lane end in previous semi finals Had Livepool been in the other end either Forest Fans would have been crushed - or it would have happened to another team in a later year.
Re: What was known - from report Police knew problems occurred there the year before when they met - Liverpool should have had the kop end. Logistically it would have been easier
Added to which the Leppings Lane end, west stand and birth stand had only 23 turnstiles serving 24,000 fans. The opposite end of the ground had 60 turnstiles to process 30,000 fans.
