That looks at a glance well in line with the increase in population over the same period.

But a much higher population density would likely lead to a higher amount per million.

Looks like the abolition of the death penalty or Rock and Roll sent figures on the up.

    RE: ????

Since 1900 they have over that period of time roughly stayed in line with the growth in population.

However, you are right in that since the 70's they have increased dramatically.

Question is, why? Political, social, economical.......

Another to add to the list is how complete are the early records. I suspect that detection rates forhomicide are better now (which is not the sameas conviction rates bythe way).

Meanwhile Texas have the death penalty and executed 28 people last year - their murder rate per thousand - 59.

What does that tell you Oakwell?

That Texas is full of unstable people with access to lots of guns and a culture and history of using them.

Exactly, have a death penalty brutalises society becasue it teaches them killing is unacceptable, and also clearly highlights why we shouldn't have guns!

    That is a shocking increase

... and shows a marked rise since the abolition of capital punishment and even more so lately due to the rising violence we all know exists.
