Norman Hunter .... great times Loved Wilson and what he did but there was an unbelievabcrowdsxle buzz around the ground then and it was a better team ... crowds/ atmosphere wasn't great under Wilson until people realised what was going to happen IMHO
Clarkey for me Cantankerous sod, but got the ball rolling just as I started going regularly. Fantastic team, playing the kind of football we can only dream about now in front of huge, noisy support. Paved the way for Hunter. Wilson has been closest to it, but without the Clarke years, I don't think Wilson and the promotion would have ever happened.
Norman H always had time to chat with the fans before the game, after the game, certainly the best mnager weve had in respect of his relationship with the fans
RE: Clarkey for me, well perhaps the first time when he came back he wasnt exactly a disaster but.................and his attitude towards the supporters was diabolical (N)
Agreed. Can anyone remember Hunter standing in the directors box at the end of the game where we clinced promotion and waxing lyrical about European footbal at Oakwell? Happy days.
Agree But he is also the proof why someone should never go back. Had a couple of decent seasons and a couple of ropey seasons second time around. However the big negative for me was that he started to come across as a reight ****. A poor Cloughie imitation.
Norman Hunter Hunter had a great following, home and away. Yes Danny got us to the premiership but Norm got the best out of all the players. Can always remember the atmosphere at Oakwell being so loud either with 7 or 8000. Wish we had the atmosphere and Norm back now. Those were the days.
What did he do to the supporters? I remember him as boss 2nd time around; as I worked at the club on Saturdays. He was always very friendly & appreciative. In fact I'd go as far as to say he was the nicest footballer/ manager type I ever met.Very personable.
Difficult one - Wish we had Hunter now with these players I always thought Hunter was the best motivator and tactician we had but he did it with the team that someone else (Clarke ) had put together He didnt seem able to bring in the players the same way so couldnt build on the sucess. Ideal scenario would be Hunter as manager/coach with Clarke as director of football
RE: What did he do to the supporters? I'd ask the old supporters club mob about that one. I seem to remember they used to sing Oh Allan Allan, Allan Allan Allan Allan 'Shithouse' Clarke! Not sure what in particular sparked that off. However his public persona was one of arrogance and he always tried to be controversial. Like I said before, he seemed to be trying to model himself on Brian Clough.
Same here, simply got to be. The only manager to ever get us to tthe top flight - and all on a budget.
