For the past week or so now, whenever I try to log onto the official site, I get a message saying "Cannot find server, The page cannot be displayed". Doesn't seem to matter what time of night or day I try, it's always the same. I have no problems accessing it from work, even though the company web filter won't allow me to visit this site, the problem only appears to happen at home. AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!
Try clearing your cookies out, Bubble - that might sort it for you. It's clearly nowt to do with the official site, as I and others can access it with no problems at all.
Tried both just now Tried the forced refresh first, no joy. Found my cookies folder, emptied it, tried again, same result.
tracert Get a command prompt up and type: tracert www.barnsleyfc.premiumtv.co.uk What do you get? This will show the path between your machine and the BFC site and should at least show if you can reach their server or not.
Just done that At least it got me a different message "No page to display, action cancelled" it told me this time.
RE: tracert How do I do that? Please be aware that I'm not very technically minded, I can operate a computer & can do VERY basic troubleshooting, but after that, I'm lost.
RE: tracert If you're on XP it's from the Start menu: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command prompt If not then it may be called "MS-DOS prompt" or similar. This should bring up a box where you can type commands. Type the command: tracert www.barnsleyfc.premiumtv.co.uk and press Return After a while it should show something like this, only with more of it. Does it finish with something like "Destination host unreachable" or "Trace complete"? Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Message received was "Unable to resolve target system name www.barnsleyfc.premiumtv.co.uk". Hope that means something to you or someone else cos I'm none the wiser!!
It means . . . . . . that your DNS (Domain Names Services) server was unable to figure out what the IP address (location) of the BFC web site server was. Does anyone with a better knowledge of networking than mine want to help out here? I'd suggest doing ipconfig /all and then checking out the DNS server using nslookup but I'm not sure what I'd do with the results. OK Another Bubble, pending serious techie help, try this. At the command prompt as before, type: ipconfig /all It should give you loads of stuff including details of your DNS servers, something like: DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 80.10.246.5 80.10.246.136 Let me know what you get. But I'm not sure I can resolve this.
OK From the top, I now have:- Windows IP Configuration Host name.................:user1 Primary Dns suffix........: Node type.................:Unknown IP Routing Enabled........:No WINS Proxy Enabled........:No PPP Adapter
Continued cos I clicked reply by mistake! PPP Adapter Alcatel Speedtouch Connection: Connection specific Dns Connection.....: Description............................:WAN <PPP/SLIP> Interface Physical Address.......................: 00-53-45-00-00-00 Dhcp Enabled...........................:No IP Address.............................:86.132.194.220 Subnet Mask............................:255.255.255.255 Default Gateway........................:86.132.194.220 DNS Servers............................:85.255.115.76 85.255.112.113
I was wondering where the rest had gone! Bear with me while I try to remember how to interrogate the DNS server. It's about here where someone else says "Have you tried x" and I look like a complete wally!
It's yer DNS mate. Not in that colour, see? For some reason your DNS server can't find the BFC site, although it's perfectly happy finding other sites (such as the BBC - see annotated results below). This DNS server was not allocated to you automatically (as is normal using a service called DHCP - it's marked as disabled on the ipconfig results you sent) so all your network settings are hardcoded in your machine configuration. How did your machine get configured for the internet? It may be that you need to change the network settings to use new DNS servers. (NSLOOKUP output) > www.barnsleyfc.premiumtv.co.uk *** This is it looking for the BFC site Server: [85.255.112.113] Address: 85.255.112.113 DNS request timed out. *** This is it failing to find it timeout was 2 seconds. Hmm I bought the computer about 3 & a half years ago. It came with loads of software installed & such like. As far as the internet connection goes, my brother set it all up whilst I was at work & it was ready for me to use when I got back. Thing is it's a bit hard to get him to come round to look at it for me as he now lives in Edinburgh! I have been fighting a battle over the last few months with a series of trojans that seem to keep getting through. Could they be anything to do with the problem, even though I've had the problem for less time than the fight with the trojans?
I'd say it was unlikely I think it looks more like whatever ISP you use has not updated those DNS servers. They may be obsolete but it's unusual these days anyway to have this stuff hardcoded in the network settings. If you look at the setup guides on your ISPs web site it should tell you how to set up your network connection, including the correct DNS servers or whether to just enable DHCP (and how to do it). This would be the best way to proceed, or contact them and get them to talk you through making any changes. You could always use the content of this thread to explain what the problem is, if necessary. I could suggest the changes but to be honest if it goes tits up then I'll have not done you any favours and it'll be difficult for you to resolve, possibly even without web access. Best to take it from here with your ISP. Sorry we haven't resolved it and good luck, Burgundy Red
RE: Download and run AdAware. His DNS server can't find the site even when I connect to it from my machine (see above thread). Still, worth running AdAware anyway but I'd be surprised if it was related to the problem.
RE: Download and run AdAware. I only ran AdAware 2 nights ago, along with a full system scan for viruses. Thanks for the help all, I'll give BT a call tomorrow & see what I can find out that way.
