I was out so didnt even get the commentary - saw we came from a goal behind to win 2-1 but was it a convincing win or did Steele or profligate finishing from Wolves get us 3 points we didnt really deserve?
Very poor first 15, think it took us a while to get used to the 4-4-2/4-3-3 but we got better and better as it went on. A bit too long ball for spells in the first half however.
Poor start but after 20mins or so we improved. A bit too direct in 1st half but we did have 3 good chances to score. 2nd half we were best team, although Steele did make a great save 1 on 1 at 1-1. Deserved win though, graft won the day again. It was a good game.
first 15 they were better. Scored and then hit the bar at about the 15 minute mark. The game changed and barnsley had four good chances 2 from dagnell and 2 from harewood. Bossed most of second half except for a great save by Steele at 1-1. Thoroughly deserved win IMO.
Bit unfair to say we were poor first 20 .... I reckon praise should go to Wolves who were immense! We couldn't cope with their tempo but then again neither could they ....after 20 minutes they looked exhausted, wasted & toothless!
Wolves came out of the blocks like they were on fire. They were clearly desperate for an early goal and they got it. Almost got another which hit the bar. We were struggling to cope with both their energy and our new formation. But after 15 minutes they ran out of steam and we began to dominate. We were a bit too direct in the first half but we still created a number of chances. Second half we thoroughly deserved to take the lead. Steele made one cracking save and there was a bit of mayhem in our penalty box during injury time, but apart from that we coped well. Up the other end we could have had a couple more. Not our best performance of this run, but we deserved the victory.
Agreed, the start was not unlike the Peterborough match, we were caught cold and could have been blown away. Ultimately, I thought we won ugly today, we out fought them once we'd got a foothold in the match and often played very direct to O'Grady who won a number of headers against the full back. Marlon and Daggers were excellent and although I don't think he played particularly well, I was impressed with the physical presence that Delap gave us in the middle, he matched Henry blow for blow. We've played more aesthetically pleasing football for large parts of this season, but we're creating chances, we should have scored more, but Steele pulled off a brilliant save at 1-1 and they had a wonder shot hit the underside of the bar (at 0-1). There's a real unity and togetherness in this team that is admirable. The whole squad went mental in front of the Ponty at the end.
That save looked immense from the bottom the the Ponty, I'm actually looking forward to the replay to see how well he really did
According to Adam Brammer from Barnsley Player, that O'Hara shot that hit the bar crossed the line when they watched the replay. Nice to see that the luck seems to be slightly turning our way too. I agree with Jay's post, they started really brightly but we weathered the storm to be only 0-1 and then kicked on. Thought we were excellent in the 2nd half.
Thanks all Nice to see we had a bit of luck its often said you make your own luck so I will take that - sounds like we just about deserved the win so not bad with 3 key players out injured
Just got home. First half was the worst we've played under Flicker. Lots of aimless punts upfront to an isolated front three, who were then a million miles away from Delap and Perkins. Really lacked width too and the full backs were exposed. Much better when we changed to a more orthodox system second half and got the ball down and tried to play. Just shows what momentum and belief can do. Lacked quality tonight but the players and fans never doubted it would come, and it deservedly did. Won without being at our best
Only my third game of the season, and a first under Flicker's tenure. Wolves bossed the first 10-15 mins and could have been two, possibly three up (Steele held a fierce shot as well as the one that hit the bar). How their goal panned out was a worrying omen for the Cup QF - undone by pace and smart passing, which let's face it, Man City are not short of! We did seem to resort to a long ball game for the first half an hour or so, ball barely touched the deck. They finally found their shape and ran the game from there on in. Superb, I'd hazard world class, save from Steele at 1-1 and a few squeaky bum moments at the end as the ball pinged around the box. I thought we lost shape, and most of our momentum after the double sub, but settled in after 5-10 mins. Dagnall not an unworthy winner of MOTM, but I'd have given it to Foster - absolutely IMMENSE performance from him, up against some big lads at set pieces. Rode our luck on more than one occasion, but winning games and just playing 'okay' is a sign of something special happening. Scenes at the end could have been from a promotion win - players in group hugs, Marlon going completely mental in front of the Ponty. Oh, and Adie Moses was there with his family. Very good. WWDWWWWWW
Good post, the only point I disagree with was Foster, who played very well overall BUT was at fault for their goal. His 500th senior appearance tonight though, and a very underrated player, so I'll let him off.
I'm a massive fan of Steve Foster and he won just about every aerial battle, but I don't think he could have got the motm after his mistake for their goal.
It's a fair point. But, all the players made a mistake at some point tonight, just so happens Fozzy's was costly.
