what the furthest you have travelled to watch a sporting event, not been on holiday and decided to watch but purposly went out you way to watch that sport.
New York - it was a holiday but specifically to go watch baseball. Also, would have been New Orleans as I was going to watch American Football, but before the trip Hurricane Katrina hit so I was unable to go, the airline started rescheduling flights and I decided to go to Chicago instead and went to a game, but I'll discount that as my plan wasn't to go to a game in Chicago.
Not far, watched footy in Ecuador but didn't go just for that. I have flown to Australia to go to see the same band play 2 concerts in 2 days though, and I've been to the States for a music festival. I've been to Italy, Slovenia and Poland to watch speedway grands prix.
I am going tomorrow to watch Malaga v Sevilla on Sunday, returning on Tuesday and then I am in hospital on Thursday for a couple of days and then go back out on Thursday to watch Malaga v Mallorca returning on Tuesday.
Re: Why? if you don't mind me asking. Holland v England, World Cup qualifier at Feyenord in 1993. Flew out early morning - Bus to Amsterdam for afternoon in bars and Red light district - Train to Match - Train back to Amsterdam and then a few hours kip in airport before return. Flight was £75 return. Took a Union Jack with Barnsley FC on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HpShwkrWtk
St Lucia for the cricket world cup in 2007 and stayed in the same hotel as the England team and the umpires...bonza!
Went to St. Etienne in 1998 for World Cup quarter final England v Argentina - left Manchester after work on the Tuesday night, went to Stansted airport to pick up the tickets from FedEx, then to Portsmouth to pick up my sister, overnight ferry to Cherbourg, drove through the day to Southern France. Watched the game (tremendous - Michael Owen's wonder goal, Beckham sent off, Campbell's "goal" ruled out at the end, lost on penalties. Then, back in the car, drove through the night and caught the ferry back on a same-day return (!!). Back in Manchester for lunch-time on Thursday. Knackered, but a brilliant experience.
Seen cricket in Australia but specifically for a sporting event - Munich Olympics 1972. Bought an old banger with two months tax and test on it for £25, did 2,000 miles in it and then sold it when we got back for £30 and the test had run out. Sweet
every BFC match for me... ....is a round trip of 2800 miles. FA Cup semi I flew in on the Saturday, home on the Monday. Play-off final I was over for one day more, made a week of it for the relegation party last season though!
Re: every BFC match for me... Oh yes, forgot about that (how could I?!!) - play-off finals at Wembley and Cardiff, I flew back specifically for those - so that's a 8400 mile return trip each time.
Re: every BFC match for me... Moscow for Russia v England purely to go for a sporting event. Also did Croatia away in a day trip. Left home 2AM & got back about 4AM the next day. Seen a lot of sporting events further afield, but they have been combined with holidays.
Re: every BFC match for me... Toronto. Maple Leafs vs Penguins, year Penguins won their last Stanley Cup.
I know it's pitiful in comparison with some on this thread But it'd have to be away at Plymouth for me. Although, in the mid 1970's, an away trip to Workington seemed to take a flipping eternity! For a fixture in the Fourth Division!! God, I was young and daft back then. At least these days I'm no longer young!!
No shame in that ... It just means that you only go out of your way for one team....... Same as me. And mine would be the same answer .... Although I cheated on the day cos I started the journey in birmingham. And anyone who has been to Palace away on a coach has actually been to the end of the earth and back.
Re: I know it's pitiful in comparison with some on this thread Sydney - Hong Kong, London - Hong Kong and San Francisco - Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Sevens is one of the bets sporting events and parties in the world!
