Good article. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/mar/08/how-football-lost-touch-young-fans Price and the demise of the terrace are both important reasons clubs need to be taking this seriously.
It has to be easy (or easier) to just be able to roll up and pay to watch a game if you decide on the spur of the moment. It has to be easy to take your youngster to a few games 'just to see' rather than signing up for a ST (even if they are free) - limited terracing may help - rather than having to relocate because all the seats near you are taken.
It's got 3 phases. Young kids: 1. It costs too much for a pay on the gate match adult + ticket. 2. Cost of food/merchandise/drink in the ground. Teenagers (under 16) 1. Prices - I can't imagine many lads at the age of 14 get £16 pocket money a week. Then add in Tuesday games etc... 2. Treatment - a lot of gangs of teenagers are treated with suspicion/targeted unnecessarily. Some are ****s. Not all. 3. To go with your parents again costs **** loads. See point 1 above. Over 16 1. They've not been going regularly before the age of 16 so why start now? 2. There are very few jobs in the area for lads at college or part time education. Again, it costs too much.
Great article and thought provoking. Unfortunately those who need to safeguard the future are too busy living in the moment.
