I watched This Week last night and Martin Luther King's co-speech writer was on and he really put in to perspective how remarkable it is that the country has gone from slavery and segregation to a black president in such a relatively short period of time. Someone else said this which is really poignant - Rosa sat, so Martin could walk, so Obama could run, so our children could fly. But the best of it is for me is that I think the significance of the race issue is only important now he's won. Although it obviosuly played a part in mobilising voters, he won the election on issues and not the colour of his skin which for me is an even bigger step forward
Whilst applauding the win, to say he won entirely on issues and not the colour of his skin isn't really correct. 95% of black voters voted for Obama I think the total of white voters voting for McCain was about 65% - which would be fairly in line with normal Rep/Dem splits.
think its all a load of crap myself getting all excited because the us have a black president??? WTF does it matter what colour he is. If we all started putting in the press we wanted to back a white PM we would get labelled as racist.
It's a big thing to the black community in America A country where up until the 60's they were treated as second class citizens - not allowed in white schools on white buses - in a way it was a form of apartiad. Remember the history of the slave trade in America - they have waited a long time for this . The black community may see it as finally acheiving recognition for their part in American soceity
I think children flying is a bit far fetched. Peter Pan being the only real life example of that ever happening and he was white.
I think he is the right shade of black to be acceptable i.e., not very black at all, like he's got a nice tan, living in Hawaii. More exotic/charismatic.
I would have been genuinely shocked if the guy had no white blood at all, had a bit of a foreign accentand/or was of a different faith. I'd like to see how liberal and tolerant and embracing of other cultures America would have been then. About the same as Britain I would expect.

I always thought Tinkerbell was a bit of a babe.
I really must try harder to do less obvious stuff. I might start to put camouflage paint on stuff and a bit of webbing and leave it in the corner, to make it more clever. Obviously Jutty P would struggle to see the funny side though.
