I'm 59 and have been watching Barnsley since the 67/68 season.I wouldn't describe myself as a passionate diehard supporter, just someone who supports the team because I was born here. However, the events of this week have sickened me. We live in a world where daily our politicians lie to us,are incompetent, lack integrity and appear at times corrupt. We try to set that aside and do the best we can for ourselves and our loved ones. Perhaps, because I'm getting older and have other things which are a priority to me,Barnsley FC is down the list of importance. However, supporting a small.Yorkshire team was never going to be controversial. I'd calculated when Mr Cryne sold the club, that it wasn't for a high price in footballing terms and that the cost shared between 5 investors was doable. I find it ridiculous that 2 years on,the purchase has not been completed. Now it appears the purchasers have not met payment times again, could be wrong. For the last 12 months, our investors have claimed to be doing everything correctly and by the book and slammed other clubs and the Football authorities. Unless this matter is concluded swiftly and the purchase of the club is finalised wholly, then I see the EFL investigating the club as they are Charlton athletic. I no longer feel tied to the club, the lies, misinformation lack of integrity in dealings with the football community, sicken me. In the UK we have a tradition of consensus, mediation and arbitration in dealing with each other. Perhaps it's a cultural difference why I don't see it but I don't like it, someone show some honour before it's too late. I feel sorry for the community and supporters of Barnsley, as I feel they deserve and expect better from people they put their trust in. Hopefully things will be resolved to the benefit of all parties. I hope I haven't upset anyone with my post nor is it to cause argument. At the beginning of the week I too looked forward to the season, now I'm indifferent due to the behaviour of the Investors.
I'm 35 but I'm in the same boat as you mate. I take solace that I don't think it will be to detriment of the playing side of things as we're signing and being linked with players.
I'm not totally on the same page as you on this but I fully understand where you're coming from. As I said the other day it's difficult to fathom exactly why our current owners ARE our owners. There's no chance of it happening but it would be reassuring for one of them to come out and explain exactly why they bought us. I've had my fingers firmly crossed since they took over that everything is above board. They're still crossed. I'm reasonably convinced they've taken no money out. That does nothing to ease the worries about what they feel they have to gain. It's not like they're here every week with scarves round their necks going nuts when we score. Like every other football club these days we're hostages to fortune. At least we're not in debt.
I'll reserve my judgement for when any evidence is shown from either side and/or the courts rule who's right and wrong.
It has indeed put a bit of a dampener on the excitement of looking forward to the new season. However, there’s nothing we can do except hope that it can be done amicably and swiftly and hope it’s not the detriment of the team
Football more than ever is way down the list of priorities for many people and the longer people are kept away from the ground, the worse it's going to get for our board who need the income.
I have nothing for you on this but a list of "what if" questions that are going through my mind. Unlike most, I have not made my mind up about the rights and wrongs of the dispute between our old owner, and our new owner. But what I do know is, there is likely to be more to this than we know so far, more to this than the two parties have so far made public. So here I go. What if there were issues with the purchase of our club that the pre-purchase investigations turned up. What if the outcome of those issues could not be determined at the time. As a prospective new owner who is yet to make a final decision regarding the purchase of our club, would you turn your back on the proposed purchase because of your concerns, or would you propose an alternative. That alternative could be that you agree a purchase price (£10m less £2m retained by the Crynes for 20%), but would you hold 50% of that sum back until it was clear what was going to happen. In those circumstances, you would agree to pay the balance over a period of 4 years, hoping it becomes more obvious what the outcome of these latent issues will turn out to be. You would also try to renegotiate the final purchase price as some of these outstanding issues crystalise into costs that you have to meet, and which had you known at the time, you would have taken account of in a reduction to the agreed original purchase price. Now, I have no idea if this "what if" scenario has any connection to reality, but I have no intention of jumping to any conclusions until I find out. With regard to the land, it makes no sense to jump deeper into the mire until you find out if any of the risks that you were originally worried about are about to crystalise. After all, the option was valid for just 6 months/1 year, and yet we know that the Crynes still have no objection to selling. My guess is that a sum was agreed, but that certain things have happened that make our new owner want to renegotiate that sum. This scenario may also be nothing but conjecture, but it does at least fit the known facts. My advice to you is to forget about it, and forget about all the implications that your thoughts might lead you to, because it will all be sorted out in the fullness of time. That is what I shall be doing.
I just remember the days of Doyle and I feel loads better. It'll sort itself out, all that matters is there's a team from Tarn in league football. Many others will be worrying about paying players not paying fees like we are. We could have l the Austrian national team in reds shirts they'll still be 11 of our own lol! Just remember to days of Paul Gibb and smile..
It’s at times like these that I wonder what the Reverend Preedy would make of it all. A level of integrity to match his is what’s needed.
If he was able to rise up from the dead, he’d probably go to a strip club first I’d imagine and the football team would be pretty low down his list of things to see.
