Not including caretakers, the next one will be the 19th in my lifetime, although I only remember clearly 16 of them from Machin onwards. If I were to rank them, on a whim, Danny Wilson would be at the top AND at the bottom, simply because there just weren't any highlights or memorable games in his last spell. Am I right in thinking when Johnny Steele stopped being manager he remained involved with the club or did he just come back later?
Was just looking to see when he died, only a few weeks before we beat Liverpool at Anfield in 2008 and that cup run, shame. Must admit I was only aware of him from the Just Like Watching Brazil thing that came on tele after we went up, impressive Scottish accent he still had for someone who had been down here for most of his life.
These: . I was first taken in 1988. I have no recollection of Clarkey though. Too young to care probably. 89/90 is when my obsession with BFC and football took hold. Best in that 27 years? Danny first time around. Worst? I dunno. I hated 2001 to 2003 so all of Spackman, Parkin and Hodges. At least we had our fleeting moments under Keith and Flicker, and I can't lump Danny's second spell in with the early noughties period because I still feel he's been jettisoned far too early.
The post-Bassett/administration period was terrible looking back, although to be honest being 18-21 at the time I was on some serious form in Regents/Pharoahs/Hedonism so it didn't bother that much!
From Jim Iley (out) onwards. Best, Wilson and Clarke (first time around), although the footy under Hunter was fab and those first few months under Flicker were just amazing. Worst, Spackman, and I was really pleased when he got the job, so what do I know. I managed to be really ill and spent a couple of months in hospital in 2003, but by all accounts that was preferable to watching Glyn Hodges' side. Would be interesting to put Big Eric's timeline alongside the managers, as the fall from grace coincides with Eric being pushed out rather perfectly. An Oakwell hero who doesn't get lauded enough in my opinion.
Clarke second time around was my first manager. Wilson first time around was best, though I enjoyed Bassett's play off season. Worst was Spackman, Hodges era.
I've seen two-thirds of them (24) since 1969 - we only had 12 managers in the 71 years prior to that...........
How bad is this? What a ***** state of affairs modern society really is. I'm cringing at the thought at what my club has turned into. (Thanks for the stats Jedstar)
Everyone from Jim Iley Out onwards though Johnny Steele patted me on the head at a wedding once. Wilson and Clarkey the first time were the best though the best team we ever had IMO was the Hunter team. The worst Glynn Hodges for me though I missed Spackman in the main. For some reason I think the Machin years were my favourite times as a red fan. Like Gordon says the influence and abilities of Eric Winstanley should not be underestimated and it's been downhill since he left. One of the few things that could restore my faith would be if we asked/begged him to come back in some capacity,
I also started with the Clarke team, although I probably went before, but can't remember. We lost 2-1 at home to Blackpool that I can remember. Wilson number one manager obviously. Worst football I remember was under Parkin, with Paul Gibbs being the worst footballer I've seen. I've least enjoyed this spell under Wilson though in all the years I've been going to Oakwell. First time I've ever chosen not to go to games even when I had nothing better on, despite having a season ticket.
