I have said all pre season that I think we will be ok and wont be in fear of going down. I put the bad second half of the season last year to the players we had lost. But I still didn't see a performance like that coming. Apart form the first 5-10 minutes and the last 10 minutes we were totally in control and should have had the game wrapped up. I know it only the first game, but if its a sign of things to come then I think we will all be happy
And to think of the players that weren't on the pitch today, as well as a couple that were playing with a lack of match fitness that was obvious after an hour. If we had a full strength squad we'd be a match for most teams in our division. And all for £50k, no agents fees and no signing on fees.
One of the really encouraging things was that most games last season if we managed one decent half you could be sure the other would be dire- Today we managed a decent first half AND a decent second half Another really encouraging sign was we actually looked like scoring and should have had 3 or 4 before the last 10 mins when we were hanging on Very pleasant surprise - definitely the most enjoyable game this calendar year
I think we'll be ok too but I have had some concerns about our defence so when I saw Wiseman at centre half I must admit I feared the worst. Once the game started though I never felt like we were going to struggle against a Middlesbrough side who are tipped for promotion but who we made look average.
Think sometimes its beneficial to be writ off. Players are forced to pull together and also we are still fetcching players to club(Crainie). we looked capable in my opinion, not world beaters but capable.
Wasn't surprised at all I think we have a decent squad with some good players who are a match for most teams in the division. We deserved to win easily and the stats prove it. We'll lose some games too and of course it's early days, but surprised? Not at all. Top half finish.
I have not seen the team in pre-season. At the end of last season, I was one of the few that were optimistic, but the general feeling of doom and gloom on here, and the lack of major signings had convinced me that the season would be a struggle. The quality of the team play in the first half was a relief and a pleasant surprise. However, those feelings of relief have got most people carried away with their after the match assessments of the players' performances. Unlike most, I thought that the keeper was lucky not to be punished for his many mistakes. Whilst Stones is undoubtedly a talent, he did make mistakes and his distribution was risky at times. Playing Wiseman at centre half was a masterstroke. KH realised that Boro would play just one forward and he played Wiseman as a free man in the centre whilst Foster was the marker. It worked fantastic. Jacob Mellis still lasts only 60 minutes and is not the answer to our creative midfielder problem. Cywka, Etuhu and Harewood are not fit. We will find Wolves a much more physical challenge. Hopefully, Cranie will sign to give us more height at the back, but we will also need to go to five in the middle. There has been lots of talk about signing players on longer contracts. Yet, no-one has mentioned Hill/Flitcroft, the team that has constructed a decent side from everybody else's cast offs. They are on a rolling 12 month contract. That is, they can move on with only 12 months compensation. Surely, this is the biggest worry.
