Most people today think it improper to discipline children, so my brother tried other methods to control his kids when they have had one of 'those moments.' Since he’s a pilot, one method that he found very effective is for him to just take the child for a short flight during which he says nothing and gives the child the opportunity to reflect on his behaviour. I don't know whether it's the steady vibration from the engines, or just the time away from any distractions such as TV, video games, computer, iPod, etc. Either way, the kid usually calms down and stops misbehaving after their flight together. He believes that the eye to eye contact during these sessions is an important element in achieving the desired results. I've included a photo below of one of his sessions with a child, in case you would like to use the technique. 093ccddd1cbaea2e080a0aa32a585b5a[1].jpg (38.1 KB)
Very good! Somehow that reminds me of a trainee pilot doing his first ever landing. He was miles up in the air, but slowly descending towards the airport. Lower and lower he descended, always in full control, but the airport was still miles away and he was not nervous. He eventually went through a bank of cloud, which seemed to last for ever, but when he eventually emerged the airport was there in front of him in full view. That's when the fear kicked in. The airport was still some distance away, but was getting closer all the time. The young trainee pilot began to sweat. He was a bit nervous, but assumed that was normal for his first landing. Lower and lower he went, the runway was now visible and getting larger all the time. The young lad began to shake and sweat was pouring off him. He could now see individual people on the streets below, and the runway was dead ahead. He was by this time absolutely petrified, shaking like a leaf and sweating profusely. Lower and lower he flew, and his fear got worse and worse. Eventually, knowing that he would fail his landing test, he had no option but to confide in his instructor. "Errrrrr.........see that runway down there?" he asked "it's a bit short, isn't it?" "Of course it is" said the instructor "But look how wide it is!"
