...can't believe I'm going to Ninian Park for the last time for a league match. She's been like a mistress to me. Scrub that, I'm there more thatn I'm with the Mrs! I've grown up there & most of my earliest memories are from the place - the crowds & atmosphere tend to stick in your mind more than being able to ride a bike or going to school for the first time. Well they do for me anyway My years of supporting Cardiff happen to coincide with the worst period in our history but that matters little. Just like golf, you can have a bad round but still remember it for that one good shot you made. Yes, the ground is tired with poor facilities - still can't beat it for atmosphere though & whilst I'm looking forward to the improved matchday experience in the new ground I can't help thinking I'm going to miss the old one.
i had the pleasure of going to cardiff this seaon (shiney) i loved it down there apart from the score line, loved the fact it was standing and even though its looking a bit old the stadium still think the atmosphere there was spot on
Moving out of the comfort zone! You're happy there and its a familiar surrounding. A lot will depend on how Cardiff perform there. If they are successful, then people will love it. If not, it will be blamed for the lack of form. Illogical Captain, but that is what happens.
I can't imagine What it'd be like for Barnsley not to be at Oakwell. Perhaps I'm just an old fart who's incapable of moving with the times.
You obviously had a good time there, well remember you on our messageboard saying how much you enjoyed the craic. You took a fair bit of stick I recall - and gave it back by all accounts. Good job you came this year because it'll never be quite the same :'(
RE: Moving out of the comfort zone! Other than the last couple of seasons we haven't really performed well at NP I reckon we'll still take the crap food & beverages over as a little reminder though - but even that's been sold on.
RE: aye Kev, but the Oakwell we grew up with is no more Every time I see the West Stand images of the Brewery. Old Ponty and Kop flood back.
ha ha yeah had a good laugh on ur message board after, n yeah did get loads of abuse from ur fans but think it was mainly my fault but was all good banter n was a good laugh
RE: I can't imagine Know what you mean Kev. Our new ground is 150yds from the old one. I'll be doing the same things before & after games. It's just the 90 minutes in between. And I'm not looking forward to seeing houses on the NP site for sure.
I couldn't imagine moving away from oakwell I've grown up as it has delevoped, i remember very little of the stadium before the current Ponty end and East stand, think i was 5 when the East stand opened. i do remeber having to sit in the west stand a few times when they were building the ponty and the East stand was full. I've missed very few home games in the last 16 or so years and im lost for what to do on a saturday when im not at oakwell.
I'm glad we've developed Oakwell From the tip it was to the decent stadium it is now. It's still Oakwell, but one more in keeping with the 21st Century especially when the West Stand is rebuilt. However, a brand new ground built elsewhere would not generate the same feelings in me.
Which is as it should be mate (Y) I reckon you'll be given a heros welcome next time you come judging by the reaction you had lol.
Totally unrelated.... but I agree with MrsHallsToffeerolls that as long as the West Stand remains then Oakwell will always be Oakwell. What was the allocation for your lot at the Cup Final last year? And do you know what the basis was? Number of Season Tickets, etc etc? Did Portsmouth get the same? Got a mate who is an Everton ST and he's trying to work out if he'll get a ticket.
That's the way to do it ...bet you imagined a squeeky voice reading that lol. Trouble is, if we had redeveloped NP we would have had to fund the entire project (bear in mind we've not got a pot to piss in) & there lots of other issues which could not be resolved. There's only one road as access to NP for instance and whilst I would think that's easy to police, they don't. Our new ground has been paid for by the Council donating the land to the football club & the retail park built on it had to pay a premium price which has in turn funded the new ground build. We've paid for the fit-out apparently (lounges etc) which will be a great source of revenue by all accounts as Cardiff struggles for conference facilities. Sensible move which should enable us to compete (and trade btw) in the future - doesn't mean I've got to like it though.
RE: Totally unrelated.... We had the same as Everton & Chelsea have got - 25,000. Allocation is the same for all clubs, no matter who they are & how many s/ts they've sold or average attendances. Remainder of the tickets go to League clubs (30 each I think), regional associations and sponsors. So if you know any players, committee men or corporation bigwigs get on the phone.
RE: I couldn't imagine moving away from oakwell I'm the same mate. Saturdays = football, not walking around shopping centres, painting or any other activity she chooses. Just don't tell her
RE: Totally unrelated.... Cheers - I hadn't realised it had been announced. Might have to see if I can get our companies corporate box then.... yeah no chance of that!
