unscrew a couple of light switchs or sockets. if the wires are red and black then yes if blue and brown not.
hth. (Y)

Well said mrx, i am a electrician if you get a firm in to do either a Periodic Inspection & Test or a Full Electrical Inspection, if your wiring passes the tests then it is ok and up to current standards.
Get a NICEIC qualified electricain to do a Periodic Inspection Agree the price beforehand and if you want any minor works taking care of when they are on site (cheaper than getting them back). The report will give you works required, ranging from 1 - Urgent attention through to 2,3 & 4 which are all levels of less serious problems.
If someone loks at your wiring and says it needs replacing cause the colours are old and not new, avoid them like the plague.
take a light switch or socket off the wall with the power off. take one of the wires out of the terminal and take note here it goes so u can put it back. Looking at the copper on the wire you have taken out, if it is stranded copper then it needs rewiring, if it is solid copper then you should be ok. The earthing might not be upto scratch but you can get someone in to upgrade it. Get a periodic inspection done, they cost between £30 -£60.
Top n bottom of it is that you can't tell just by looking. Generally if the wiring is not plastic coated (hessian or rubber) it will need re-wiring for sure. Tests may show that some parts of the wiring is perfectly ok and other bits may need changing (Plastic coating exposed to heat can become brittle for example). It's worthwhile getting a proper test done every few years, particularly when you consider that a large number of house fires are down to electrical faults.
