McPhail was a great player for us . However ,

Howard has been brilliant for us this season . Some fans were concerned when Jacob Burns left us earlier this year and Howard replaced him . In my humble opinion , Howard and Togwell are a superior midfield pairing for us than Burns and McPhail .

    Oh yes he did

Up to Burns' departure , Howard had been used sparingly first due to his pre-season injury and then due the fine form shown by both Burns and McPhail . Also , he had the odd game wide left when Devaney was injured . As soon as Burns left , Howard became McPhail's partner in centre midfield for the rest of the season.
Out of curiosity , who do you think played in Burns' position after he'd left ?

    RE: Oh yes he did

For me Burns role was always as a defensive midfielder and hec was never efectiveley replaced until we got Togwell.

As I said earlier , Howard replaced Burns in the centre of midfield

However , as you rightly say , he didn't play anything like the same role as Burns . The style of the team altered somewhat , as neither Howard nor McPhail are predominantly defensive . Once Togwell signed , he did that role . For me Togwell is better than Burns and Howard has been a revelation , so much so that I don't think we've missed McPhail .

Howard most certainly did replace Burns

We were struggling for goals last season and the Burns / McPhail partnership did not help matters.

It was a no brainer for AR to get shut of Burns and promote Howard into the first team.

    I'd genuinely forgotten about MacPhail.

    :)
