The Tigers were beaten 2-0 at Barnsley last night but from Peter Taylor's point of view it was another good workout for his squad.

City conceded a goal in each half but did create one or two chances of their own which they failed to convert.

In truth, it wasn't the most inspiring game you'll ever see and Taylor said afterwards:

"I said to the players before the match that I wanted them to have 45 minutes each and not get injured.

"I want to do some work with them today and for me, I'm happy that we came away with no problems.

"Of course, I don't like losing but Barnsley scored a couple of goals and that's it."

Taylor had 22 players available for the game but was still without Ben Burgess, Jason Price and Stephen McPhee.

Barnsley showed first and scored with less than two minutes on the watch.

Mark Lynch was forced to concede a corner from a great low cross and when Stephen McPhail whipped it in, Robbie Williams rose unopposed to head past Matt Duke from eight yards.

It was a bad start from City and nearly got worse on seven minutes as Duke had to tip away McPhail's long-range effort.

The Tigers' first real effort on goal came after 24 minutes.

Barnsley failed to clear a corner properly and when Stuart Green delivered a great cross from the right, Leon Cort headed wide.

    HALFTIME: Barnsley 1 Tigers 0

Peter Taylor sent out a different XI in the second half and would have been looking for a big improvement.

He nearly got one within a minute of the restart as Elliott broke down the right channel and crossed for Alistair Benson.

However, the young striker couldn't quite get the ball out his feet and skewed his shot over the bar.

Then on 59 minutes, Elliott burst clear down the middle but was denied by the legs of Barnsley keeper Scott Flinders who had come hurtling out of his area.

City had one or two half chances to equalise but on 78 minutes the home side struck a killer blow.

Leite came for Chris Shuker's cross from the right but collided with Scott Wiseman.

As he hit the deck, the Portuguese keeper lost control of the ball and Williams blasted home into an empty net.

    TIGERS (first half):
Matt Duke, Mark Lynch, Andy Dawson, Leon Cort, Marc Joseph, Stuart Green, Ian Ashbee, Russell Fry, Ben Wilkinson, Kevin Ellison, Craig Fagan.

TIGERS (second half): Sergio Leite, Scott Wiseman, Roland Edge, Michael Byron, Damien Delaney, Ryan France, Keith Andrews, Curtis Woodhouse, Ashley Allanson, Stuart Elliott, Alistair Benson.

    BARNSLEY:
Scott Flinders, Paul Reid (Wroe 70mins), Matt Carbon (Vaughan 70mins), Stephen McPhail (Burns 57mins), Paul Hayes, Neil Austin, Antony Kay, Chris Shuker, Dale Tonge, Robbie Williams, Danny Nardiello (Conlon 70mins).

Subs: Nick Colgan, Tony Vaughan, Jacob Burns, Barry Conlon, Nicky Wroe, Nathan Jarman, Nathan Joynes, Ryan Laight, Tom Harban, David Scarsella.

I don't see how they got ANYTHING out of it myself, what a waste of time. I felt for their supporters who came.

I'd lvoe us to try and get a couple of

Big teams to play us at home preseason. Would add a nice bonus to club funds.

I agree... Leeds isn't bad as they'll bring a few, it's just a shame it had to be moved to noon.

But certainly someone like even Middlesbrough or Newcastle would have been good.

That's what worries me. I said the very same to Wayne!

Flinders is streets ahead of Colgan.
Colgan is a back up keeper at best!
I hope that on Saturday, Ritchie sees who the REAL keeper should be down at Oakwell and although Flinders is not the finished article, Colgan can't measure up to him at all.

That'd be good. I also think you'd get more out of it than playing Glossop, Bideford, Buxton, Scarborough etc.

There's also quite a few foreign teams tour over here now so we could get one against them. An example of this is Chesterfield playing Malaga.

I'd also get a couple of games in away against the smaller league clubs like Lincoln, Notts County and Mansfield.

    It concerns me too...

But he only had one save to make last night so couldn't really learn a lot from that, though it was an impressive save.

    I agree...

A fixture v foreign opposition, especially a Serie A or La Liga side would be great.

He would be getting his 90 minutes against Leeds, where there might be some proper fire power to test him.

Get rid of Scarsella and Colgan and get Turnbull back in.

If Colgan gets a game infront of Flinders you cannot blame the lad for either becoming demoralised or wanting to leave, especially if he comes on here and sees what the fans think.

With Turnbull back in the squad, if he's available, Flinders has some genuine competition for the place and we get some genuine strength in depth in, in what my opinion is, the most important position on the pitch.

Saw Flinders play for Hartlepool a couple of seasons ago at Oldham. (I was being paid to be there and missed a home win against Preston)
It was probably the worst goalkeeping display I have ever seen, in professional football, that night. I was literally LOL. Finished 4 nil, could have been 10 if told'em old'em had owt about them.
Was a bit awkward when I talked to him after the game.
Think at one point I said 'Well your big but you're not very good'
Whatever we got from Palace in the end, we robbed them.
