If he wasn't a barnsley lad who had made us some money and looking set to make us some more, would he still be classed as a young lad making the best of his career or just another football mercenary who had left 2 clubs chasing a larger pay packet
I think it would depend where he originally came from. If it was any of the Sheffield pubs or Leeds ,Stones would be a greedy git ,anywhere else I'd be saying £30+m for an inexperienced 21 yr old Chelsea have more money than sense. and good luck to him
Holgate is a football mercenary. Complete and utter. (unless he's sold on at a decent fee with a juicy % to boot)
I find it hard to knock him to be honest. He left us to join a top half premiership club with a great fan base & good history. He's now wanting to leave them for the champions of England & a team regularly in the champions league. Now if you were in Stones' position and 3 inferior (in my opinion anyway) defenders Cahill, Jones & Smalling have been ahead of you in the England pecking order I'd be thinking why is this? Obvious answer is they're playing regular champions league football. With Euro 2016 been next summer I can fully understand his motives to move. What I'd call a mercenary is Sagna, was 1st choice at Arsenal & left to be back up to Zabaleta for a bigger wage and similar deals to that.
