If the club were to be sold at the end of the season, unless there was a consortium it seems unlikely the new owner(s) would be either local or Barnsley supporters. If we were to be sold to a Russian oligarch or an Arab Sheikh, how would you feel? They would be in it more as either a business or a hobby than any genuine affection for the club, but it could be better for us both in the short term and the long term? Would you see it as a positive or fear some kind of Portsmouth situation?
I think the vast majority would not give two shits as long as they put a bit of cash in & we did ok. For years we never saw or heard from Mr Cryne because of his health - did having the club owned by a supporter make any difference then? Difference now is they've marketed it really well.
Not for me. I would never want us to be a Man Sh1tty or a Chelsea - nothing clubs ruining football on the back of winning the oil-lottery. Some investment over and above what we are capable of is sadly necessary in the modern day. Our current situation, with a benefactor who loves us, is the best situation we could have. I worry what will become of us when said benefactor is no longer able to fund the extra bit of fat to keep us at this level. Either: nobody funds it and we drop to League One; or someone does, gets bored, and we go out of business. Without Cryne, we'll always be more vulnerable than we are now, even if we have more short-term success during a new owner's honeymoon period.
I firmly believe that should we have a new owner at the start of next season, Patrick and the board will fully complete a competent persons check, making sure that the club is in the hands of the right people. Patrick is a supporter and will want to ensure the continued success of our club. Having said that, it depends on who is going to look at buying us..... we are a club with a great history, a solid championship status. We have a good strategic policy, and are probably in the best financial position for some years. We have no idea who is interested in buying our club, and will never know. I'll still be a Barnsley fan, and providing the lads on the pitch and our manager still focus and entertain us week in week out, I'll still get to as many matches as I can. I can't see a rich Russian or Saudi buying us, I can probably see a consortium or another rich individual from the local area taking over. Which means that we probably won't see much more investment, just probably a status quo, built around the current policy of buying great value assets, that we can develop and increase the resale value of.
So everyone has come with a reasoned response and you come up with this *****. You are a waste of time Tyrone. Absolutely fecking pointless.
I'd heard chattering regarding an eventual takeover by two of our current major sponsors being the likely scenario, but had written these off as outputs of the rumour mill.
I wouldn't be thrilled with anyone but a Barnsley fan in charge, but I'm realistic enough to know there aren't many of them about with millions in the bank. Therefore I'd most likely still support the club in the same way and hope that the actions of the new owners would be in the best interests of the club. If they turned out like SISU etc I wouldn't be attending and I certainly wouldn't be rolling out the red carpet to welcome them like most fans would.
I'd be concerned for every good news story there is a Venky's or the guy running Orient into the ground. Local owner model works well for us given the limitation of our potential
People are always saying, "I can't see a rich Russian or Sheikh buying Barnsley". Why not? What made Bournemouth such an attractive proposition to Maxim Demin? We had more historical success, a bigger stadium capacity and greater core support than they did.
Bournemouth, Man City, Chelsea. The four examples you have given (and I'm not disputing them by the way) were in a time where the rewards weren't as great as they are now. Bournemouth are the example to look at for me. Before their takeover we were a superior club in every way. Having a Russian oligarch has put them years ahead of us.
