I ought to have known better. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and go about-face and claim to support the apparent decision. But at least its a decision. Yes, its cheap. Yes, its low risk as he probably wont demand a five year contract or whatever. But the long term future of the club has to be assured, and PC might lack a bit of nouse on footballing terms, but I am not qualified to question his business accumen, nor are most, if any, on here. I am hoping he will be coming in either as assitant or in a head coach capacity with an older head above him in a mangerial/director of football kind of role. But maybe he will just get the reins completely. Whatever, the 100% backing of us all is paramount and is guaranteed from myself. I never stopped wanting Davey to succeed, I stopped believing he ever would, but never stopped supporting the club, and therefore him. Many would prefer another, bigger name. This does smart of another Steve Parkin. Do Rotherham have any Gary Jones type players? (doh) There is no universal opinion out there as to who should get the job, therefore there isnt one obvious answer. The number of names suggested on here, even if you only consider the ones suggested in all seriousness, mean the said shortlist of 20 could well have been nearly 50. It might not be a done deal, it might already be done. Whatever happens its a new chapter in the club's history, and success or failure I know I want to be part of it. For the record my first choice would have been Paul Jewell, and if they wanted a perhaps cheaper option, Adkins from Scunny. But I dont make the calls. If it is Robins, so be it. It is not a bad decision. And if you are reading this as our new manager Mark, welcome to our football club, I hope you enjoy your time here and bring us success. (clap)
My personal opinion... is that Nigel Adkins would turn us down, and that Mark Robins will turn us down. But we wait and see.
world had gone mad? before Davey was sacked I thought Robins would be the obvious choice. The club are prepared to take a risk on inexperienced managers, he is showing a lot of potential and he won't break the bank. As you say there is the obvious Steve Parkin scenario that could occur. But I'd be very pleased to see Mark Robins at Oakwell. I just feel sorry for the Millers if they are to lose him.
RE: My personal opinion... if he was gonna turn us down i doubt if he'd have bothered to talk to the club, Rotherham saying he could didn't mean he had to. Rotherham will fancy the moolah for him anyway. Peter Jackson for Rotherham anyone?
Has he definitely spoken to the club then? The only news I've heard is that Rotherham have given us permission to talk to him.
RE: world had gone mad? It wasnt obvious to me conko, but then maybe I set my aspirations higher, and somewhat unrealistically. There are plenty of examples of managers from lower leagues succeeding when they step up. But more of those who dont. Robins to me comes across as someone who could succeed, he never reached his potential as a player if you ask me, so there's something left to prove. As I say, my opinion doesnt matter as I dont make the decisions, but I like to think my support does matter. The new manager, whoever he is, has it.
If he's applied for the position.. then obviously its highly unlikely that he will turn it down. But my gut feeling, and thats all it is, is that he will decide to finish what he's started with Rotherham. I'm pissed off by the whole thing - if we'd done what we should have done and got rid of Davey in the Summer (I'm with Jay in that I'm not sure how 5 games can make that much of a difference) then a new manager would have been easier to find and less of a rush. I sincerely hope we are still interviewing more than one man and are determined to get this right - and if thats the case, then I don't expect to hear anything until next week. But we shall see. If Robins does take the job, he will have my 100% backing and I do think he'd be a decent appointment, but again, its just a gut instinct.
Perhaps we should have had changed manager in the summer. It would have been a far better time to do it. I can understand why PC decided to hang on but following all Ive seen this season at home (and wednesday first half and lincoln) it became bloody obvious to me that after the Reading game, the game was up and we had to act. The international break offered an ideal opportunity to take at least a little time sorting it out. Again I hope that we are / have talked to others. If Robins is offered the position and turns it down PC will have to have a total rethink or risk pissing everybody off.
Published Date: 02 September 2009 ROTHERHAM United boss Mark Robins could be hours away from waving goodbye to the Millers after talks concluded at Barnsley this evening. He was given permission to speak to Oakwell directors by Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart and spent several hours there this evening, leaving around 8.10pm. Robins has not signed any contract - but some fans think he'll be ambitious enough to want to make the jump up two divisions to the Championship. The Barnsley manager's job became available after chairman Patrick Cryne parted company with Simon Davey. It is believed that Robins, aged 39, can be released from his Millers contract if a compensation fee is paid. Barnsley are bottom of the Championship after picking up just one point from five games. Former Manchester United striker Robins took charge of Rotherham, who are second in League Two, in March 2007. Mr Stewart confirmed:"Mark is in discussions with Barnsley. "But we believe his future is here at Rotherham. We hope he makes the correct decision and stays and finishes what he's started. "We have made tremendous strides over the past 18-months on and off the pitch - Mark has been an integral part of the progress we have made. "We want to be a Championship side in our own new stadium in Rotherham in the next three years. I am committed to those goals."
