By getting a 0-0 draw at QPR Davey to go with 5-4-1 with macken only up front.

Best time to play them - before they have 'gelled' as a team.

Gelled, eh? I love that word Tina

    :D

There'll be more gelling than t'parson preached about for the first few months of the season. Everybody will be gelling like mad. Those who go off to a flyer will have already gelled. Those with a few decent results will be partially gelled, and those who are playing like **** will still be waiting to gell. It'll be the most overused phrase since "lessons to be learned" or "at the end of the day". Actually I love it really.

I only hope that we will have gelled better than QPR on Saturday.

i dreamed last night that i looked at the bbc website and there was a link to our match report for the qpr game that read: Hume seals win for the reds with his first half strike.

    Let it be true!

I have the same feeling; in fact I know for sure we will get a result. The question is, will the result be a win, loss or draw?

A result along the lines of QPR 3 Barnsley 0

Fairly confident on the Barnsley 0 bit
QPR score has a possible error of +- 2 goals

    we will win 2-0

Davey will start with 1 up front, Ian Dowie will be complaining of a 'smash and grab' raid etc. We'll then lose at Crewe, draw with Derby and get slaughtered at Birmingham.

    To be brutally honest

right now, I can only see us struggling. We've had a disrupted pre season as the manager has been ill for 3 weeks, so I'd argue we're behind other Championship sides in our preparation, certainly we dont seem to know our best formation at this stage, which is leaving it late. We've picked up niggly injuries which has meant we havent been able to play our best 11, not to mention long term absentees who it seems are at least another month away from first team football. The departure of the Chairman has left a void as yet unfilled, our best player and club captain appears unsettled and demotivated by the lack of engagement from the board regarding his contract. Our 2 experienced signings, both from relegated teams, seem off the pace, the others are unknown quantities, and we do not seem to have strengthened at all in key areas, hence playing players out of position. The competition has got more intense, the teams coming up have spent, significantly in Forest's case, and those coming down have parachute payments and then some. The message given out by Patrick Cryne is that our target this season is for a top half finish, and in order to achieve that the manager will have significant funds at his disposal to bring in quality players. But in complete contrast to that, given all the above, the manager is saying we are going to start the season with what we've got. Our season starts with games against teams that all aspire to promotion, arguably automatic, and have spent money accordingly. If we get a point out of QPR, Coventry, Derby and Birmingham, I'll be surprised.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

We'll get a couple of good results out of those first four games.

And people will refer to that as 'evidence' as to how well we're doing. This happened when we drew at Colchester last year: a team who anyone with an ounce of sense recognised were a shadow of the side that pushed all the way for promotion the previous season.

Anything can happen in the first five or six games as all sides try to find their feet, embed news players and so on, and there will be some shock results. Sadly, it's what's going to happen the rest of the season that's worrying me.

Sensible post there mate. Why not put some of those questions to Simon Davey tonight on Radio Sheffield. There is a forum from Sheffield University tonight at 6'o clock. Football heaven when all the local managers ( including Davey) will be there to answer questions. :)

Quite right a draw on Saturday will be a 'fluke' but possible. However like you I have the feeling the first 6 or 8 matches are very difficult and considering the way we performed pre season I am afraid we will struggle to get any points.
