In fact, I think he's our best player. Is he perfect? No. That's why he's at League One Barnsley. I think we'd have probably got relegated last season if it weren't for him, and we'd probably be in the relegation zone this season were it not for him. Don't understand the constant negative comments towards him. Just my opinion...
Lad is talented, no doubt about it. But why is he so little involved, compared to Pearson and Scowen (and, less effectively, Watkins)? And why does he spend so much time picking the mud out of his boots?
Fantastic player at this level. People equate running around a lot with ability or quality. Yesterday his deadballs weren't the best but we still scored from one. We would have been relegated without him last year and he's just as vital this year.
Agreed. He is our creative force, leading goalscorer and creator. Without early season we struggled to even put a shot on target. We need more goals from strikers, and more options in the box for midfield to aim for.
He might suffer from the "Perkins syndrome" Perkins ran around lots and so some thought he was good, Connor doesn't and some think he's bad. Different strokes for different folks and all that. M **** knows how Ronnie Gavin would have gone on nowadays with our crowd. And no, that's not comparing Ronnie to Connor
I'd take someone less involved but contributing with goals/assists over players who are more involved but achieve way less. Running around alot doesn't make someone a good football player.
Ronnie Glavin played in a different game of football in those days. Wished he was in his prime and playing alongside Winnall. We would get some goals, that is if LJ did not tie him up to the system
Agreed. Problem is Barnsley fans love players that run around a lot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I honestly don't think he's our best player but a talented one nonetheless. The issue at the moment isn't his effort or work rate which have increased a whole load since he's come back to full fitness, I just personally expect more in this division for his talent. He very rarely creates from open play and yesterday all but one of his set pieces were bang average. Even leading to Mawson taking a free kick in a position that was made for Hourihane. He's nowhere near as bad as some make out. But he is also nowhere near as good as some people claim he is.
Last year we would have been better off without him. His stats were inflated by dead balls. He gave virtually nothing to the side in open play and the shape of the side was sacrificed to fit him in. Im more than confident the team would have more than covered the goals he scored had we played to the benefits of more of our players than just Conor. However, I think he's improved a lot over the last couple of months but he's certainly not close to being our best player. Scowen, Winnall, Nyatanga and Crowley are all better players than him. Also, I've never understood this saying that gets spouted on here 'thats why he's in league one'... No player at any level is good at everything, noone expects them to be but when people bring up aspects last season like his workrate, tracking back, actually giving a **** I'd say your pretty entitled to expect your central midfielder to be giving a little more. As good as someone may be at corners/free kicks whatever, it's still immensely frustrating when they don't involve themselves in open play. But I think he's doing that less this season, I've noticed him making more challenges and chasing loose balls every now and again. He was naff yesterday mind, but then so was everyone else in a red shirt.
Agreed. Always annoyed me when people have said he shouldnt be expected to track back as much because he's creating. He creates **** all from open play so why shouldnt he be tracking back? Now he's begun to he looks a much better player. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't think he's lazy at all. Scowen & Pearson show him up for work rate but they would do that to 90% of players. It's all well & good criticising Hourihane but until we create goals from open play he's undroppable.
Problem with that is that until he's dropped we wont go 4-4-2 which IMO would suit more of our players and make us more attacking to get the goals from open play. Then again actually, he may be able to be in the 4-4-2 these days. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
His dead ball deliveries are usually of a fairly high standard but yesterday he let himself down, but hey we all have an off day. The problem lies at the managers door with his baffling selections and formations. Tuesday night is the perfect time to change the system and try something different. I will not hold my breath!
He's probably the most talented but he's the reason we don't ever play 2 up front. He isn't strong enough to play as one of the two CM's in a 4 4 2, can't tackle. No pace and can't take a man on to play wide on the wing. He's got to play in the hole behind the front one. The manager won't drop him cos he's the main man for set pieces. The only way I can see us playing 2 up front with him playing also would to play a 3 5 2. My 2p worth.
