I like this rule - in view of how tight it is at bottom!!

"If two or more teams are level before the end of the season on points, goal difference and goals scored, then alphabetical order will determine the team finishing higher".

What happens at the end of season though?

That says "before the end of season" - so is there a one game playoff at end of season if level?

    after that, surely it's....

....results between the two teams that are taken into account. Not sure after that, maybe away goals if the aggregates are level? Or perhaps the two managers have to have a fight, televised live on Sky pay-per-view. Wouldn't fancy anyone's chances of going head to head with Denis Wise, he's a sneaky little lovely person. John Gregory would be a pushover though, he's a bitof a nerd, as is Mike Newell.

    This is how it works

    According to Sporting Life Website

Teams receive three points for a win and one point for a draw.
The top two teams will be automatically promoted to the Premiership.
The teams finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth will then play off for a third promotion place.
The bottom three teams will be automatically relegated to League One.
If two or more teams finish level on points the team with the better goal difference will finish higher.
If two or more teams have the same points and the same goal difference, the team which has scored the higher number of goals will finish higher.
If two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored at the end of the season and the championship, a promotion place, play-off place or relegation place is at stake they will then play off to decide who finishes higher.
If two or more teams are level before the end of the season on points, goal difference and goals scored, then alphabetical order will determine the team finishing higher.

So it's a play off if a relegation place is at stake

    The alphabetical order doesn't matter

Be interesting if 2nd and 3rd were level - a play off for the automatic place, and then the losers would have to go into the playoffs on a downer!

when was the last time this happened?

two teams finishing equal on points and goals scored and whatever else they use, and going into a play-off to decide a relegation, promotion or play-off place. If it has ever happened.

It happens a lot in Italy because they don't take goal difference/goals scored into account.

If level on points they take the head to head record of the teams and if that's equal they have a playoff.
