    Which ones best?

    Any recommendations?

Been reading the reviews and most put the Ipad at the top but I don't really want to spend £400.

Nexus 7 or LG G pad seem decent alternatives or may go for the i-pad mini.

Thinking of buying it for the wife who will probably play candy crush most of the time but she is also a mobile hairdresser so the calender will help her plan appointments.

you definitely don't need an iPad, for a hairdresser who just wants to play candy crush. how about a nice new set of curling tongs?

Depends what size screen you / she wants.

If 10", the Ipad Air and Samsung Galaxy Note come out on top in the latest Which review.

If 7", the Ipad Mini and Google Nexus 7 are high up in that test.

Consider the Tesco Hudl - at £119 and a score of 76% from Which (Ipad Mini 79% and Nexus 7 77%).

I have bought my other half the Hudl and she loves it. It is impressive for the price.

Hudl included in voucher boost so can be bought with £60 in Clubcard vouchers
Aldi have a similarly specced 7" Android 4.2 tablet with 3-year warranty for £80 (offer starts today and stocks limited)
Google Nexus 7 as mentioned and Kindle Fire HD a good buy at £100 also.
iPad is brilliant but if it is for reading, websurfing and Candy Crush it's bloody expensive when a machine a quarter of the price will do all that.

I had exactly the same dilemma when choosing a present for this Xmas. I was torn between the iPad mini, Kindle and Nexus7. I read reviews and got opinions from people I know and when considering everything, including the price, I have gone with the Nexus7. I just hope I don't regret it.

    Thanks everyone for their contributions.

Tempting as it was Tomfun, I don't think the wife will be as thrilled with a set of curling tongs as she would a tablet.

I'm leaning towards the Nexus 7 I think but the Hudl might win me over yet.

The only spanner in the works is she is talking about getting an iphone 4 when her contract renews next year so Ipad mini will make interaction of diaries & music easier.

no to the tongs then? ;) in all seriousness, i would decide based on other devices you have. if you have android phone, get an android tablet. if you have an iPhone, or any other apple devices, get an iPad/mini. it's all about integration

thats what I'm concerned about if I get the Nexus.

She has an andriod phone now but is thinking of getting an iphone when her contract runs out in March.

the tablet and phone should be on the same operating system really. would be a bit bonkers, buying an android tablet, then switching to iPhone in 3 months

I swapped my iPad for the new Nexus 7. Absolutely no regrets. It's a fantastic piece of kit.

The hudl's are good also. Not quite up to the same spec as the Nexus 7 (more like last years Nexus 7) but they are a great price.

I have an Android tablet, its is perfect for what I want it to do. My other half had an Ipad and it was faster than mine, but I could never get used to it and she after 6 months got shut because it didnt suit her.
If you can try out each one, because what suits one will not suit another.

You can also buy a HDMI lead for the Huddle to connect it to your tv.

Not being facetious..but what exactly does a tablet do that a smartphone or laptop doesn't...or what are the ad/dis advantages?

different form factor, different operating system.

essentially, tablets and smartphones do very similar things, and often even share the same operating system. but obviously a tablet is a lot bigger, so they're easier to use. very different from laptops though. tablets sit on lightweight mobile operating systems and are 'app based'. laptops have desktop operating systems, and have file management/database structures, device ports for keyboards, monitors, mouse etc.

tablets aren't really built for storage. they're really built for browsing & apps

it's not uncommon for people to have a smartphone a tablet and a laptop...and use them all differently

I've just been researching these for the past 3 hours as a potential xmas present for my dad. A larger screen is pretty much a must for him. All he needs it for is facebook and Player. I've pretty much decided on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1" if I can stomach the £229 it costs at Tesco (£199 at Currys, but completely out of stock).

Anyone know of any cheaper 10" screens that are decent? Thanks in advance.
