Judging from the posts that I have read, the majority see it as McCann was the star and Devaney the opposite. I do not agree. For me, the way to get at Norwich was to attack down the flanks. The only time that Devaney got in a cross from closer than 18 yards from the goal line, we scored. From the left, there was nothing because Howard does not have the ability or the inclination to stay wide and attack the full back. He also does not protect his full back as well as Devaney protects Hassell. Consequently, every time Devaney recieved the ball he was faced by 2 defenders because Norwich concentrated on blocking our main threat. To my eyes McCann did not give the ball away much because he was passing the ball sideways. He still lacks pace and he still lacks the ability to find a destructive pass. In other words, he is inferior to Howard in that position. Finally, a word on the tactic being employed by the manager. Our current game is based on not conceding the first goal. We defend deep with a big gap to the front two, who consequently become isolated. It does not matter which pair we play, as long as we continue to play this way they will be living on scraps and will not look good. Plan B seems to be to stick with plan A until the last 20 minutes and then go even narrower and simply hit long balls to a front 3, or even 4 when Paul Reid stayed forward yesterday and hope for the best. All those coaching badges and all they can offer is lash to ball forwards. I despair.
