2 more straight off the production line and onto the 1st bus to the conference!

Get the feckin thing shut down.

Who was the last home grown player to leave for a decent fee? Surely it was't Tyler was it? I know Robbie was 'sold' but there was'nt a great deal of cash involved.

    It's cack.

We had one player - Richard Carrington, banged about 25 goals in for the academy, scored 5 or 6 for the reserves. Got academy player of the year...then was released at the end of the season. WTF was that all about?!?

    Our Academy Is A Joke

It costs a lot to run, we keep hearing how it's suppose to be one of the best in the country and it just doesn't produce the goods to warrant us keeping it open.

    Administration didn't help in fairness

Set us back anything between 5-10 years.

I'd keep faith with the academy, if SD is our long term manager, the academy will definately be part of his plans. Remember the job he came to the club to do in the first place?

It is the cost of decent coaches that is the problem nt

How much do you think a decent coach costs and how would you know if you had one?

Its not the quality of the coaches thats the problem.

Its the quality of the scouting network or rather its size of that isn't spotting talented youngsters at an early age.

Theres also the issue of the time we spent in the Ale House League and the administration issue.

It's also difficult attracting youngsters when there are Clubs like Man U who spend a massive amount on their Academy. I know of a 10 year old who was flown by helicopter to Manchester to beat the one and a half hour traveling rule. It also makes me mad when I see Barnsley area youngsters in the Chronicle who are being coached at one of Man U's many training centres.

The Academy costs peanuts to run compared to the transfer fees being asked for players.

Player development is a long term issue. 10,000 hours is the figure commonly quoted for an individual to reach the top in any sport.. Most Clubs only have the players in for about 5 hours a week. That includes training and match time.

The comment DB3k makes just show he hasn't got a clue as far as player development is concerned.

I don't see much interest being shown around the local clubs

There are some brilliant youngsters out there in the under 10's teams around Barnsley but I don't have any evidence anybody is checking on them from our club. Washday and Blunts and Leeds are but not us, correct me if I'm wrong.

During the time I was involved in Junior football I never met a scout from BFC at any of our games, and I use to watch at least 3 games every weekend . Most of the player recruitment at Oakwell seemed to be done via the Schools network.

Its not only the Clubs you mentioned who scout this area. S.cnuthorpe took several players on trial from a Wombwell Club not too many years ago and in 1997-98 I was asked to scout Junior football in the Barnsley for Nottingham Forest.

If we want to get the best players into our Academy we have to spend more money not less and we need them to spend more time at the Club.

I was vilified around 12months ago when I suggested selling off the academy land for houses.

Selling to a developer would bring us a few £million, the acadamy wont ever do that.

Thats a big assumption to be making. I would have said it's not the only problem but it is a problem nevertheless.
To my way of thinking it is the most highly valued job in the club behind the manager and on par with the chief scout.
