I think 'rules himself out' would be more appropriate than 'turns us down'

You can't turn someone down unless they offer you the job and it doesn't sound like that has happened to me. Sean O'Driscoll doesn't claim to have been offered the job, as he states "At no point were terms discussed by either party."

I understand we interviewed five candidates for the job. Sean O'Driscoll was clearly one of them, but we don't know if he was the first choice of our board, all we do know is he has ruled himself out. Maybe after the interviews the board favoured another and he will be offered the position this coming week. No plan B needed as plan A is still in place. Maybe.

Sounds to me like "I wouldn't touch them with a barge poll, they're having' a laugh and I don't care what they offer me - I was doing well at Forest five minutes ago".

I think we have to get our heads around the way the rest of football look at us as a club and a brand.

Agree, especially with the first point. He's withdrawn from the application process. Not quite the same as being offered a position and not accepting it.

Its a reasonable take on it.

Not sure what is gained by either party making a statement mindsthi.

Whatever the position is, it is ti be hoped they can make an appointment in the next couple of days otherwise we will be running out of players and time for a new man to improve the squad.

Not that I've much hope of us getting out of it this time no matter who gets the job.

Not necessarily, we don't know the terms of his payout. Could be if he accepts another job within a certain timeframe he waives some compensation. This is typical in many jobs.

    That's true

And, when an appointment is made, that'll be what is said by the club.

It's a bit of a cop out by the club, by posting his statement on the club site it says, "we know you wanted SOD and we listened to what you said, but we approached him and he ain't interested".

I think that if you're interviewed for a job and then don't take it based on that interview and other mitigating circumstances, then it's pretty much the same as turning it down - or at least saying I wouldn't take the job if it was offered. It's the same thing really. Same end result anyway.

From S O'D's statement - "I've respectfully declined the opportunity to become Barnsley's next manager."

That reads as turned down the offer in any other language. The preface of his disappointment with the Forest sacking gives it a gentle "it's not you it's me" sugaring, but it's still a rejection.

"I no longer wish to be considered...." is the usual form I think, Michael.

I read that and didn't immediately think, he's been offered the job and said 'no'.

When you have been exposed to as much public school, civil service managerial twaddle as I have - it becomes quite simple to interpret.

For example, to refer to "declined the opportunity" past tense, is to relay his perspective on events. It would be very presumptuous and frankly poor form if anything other than a direct, formal tender had been forthcoming. Not unless there has been bit of a faux pas in the press department or whatever.

Anyrooooerd, who gives a shiteing, tossing bollack? Next useless annual waster please!

    Depends

I've heard "declined the ooportunity" used by folks who never had a chance.

In this case I think we asked him if he's interested and he's said no. Not the same as being offered terms.

We made an official approach for Russell Slade when I'm sure Hill was No1 choice....

Remember he sat and discussed things, strategy and plans. If your not ready to get back into any management job and have clauses that could impact from taking a role now, why would you sit and discuss. My take on this conspiracy was that he didn't want the job offered. Not an its too soon after my dissapointment. He has managed with nothing and managed with something in this division. He knows the difference and whats viable.

SOD will still be drawing his full contracted wage from Forest. He would lose that if he came to us, or anyone else who would pay less than Forest.

Football is just a honey pot for anyone in the professional game.
