in my unit,64 fld pk squad RE,s just far enough behind the front line bonfire night every night i mean gunfire night i lived in a 12 maan tent yankee style type ,we had a guard house,made Canadian,korean style and out side that Guard house ,Stood a FIRE ExTINGUISHER a big large bottle and a big pair of wheels it ws higher than me at 5 2 it never Moved,no one checked it to see if it worked we never had time now,to get to the next tent where Dog troop were they were away from the rest of us they also had a 12 man tent we had to go up a Man made ramp12 ft steep ish on this day when it happened it was Lunch time Oh yes we had lunch when we were in camp in the Cook house powdered spuds and Chicken legs every day and i mean every day (no wonder i enjoyed my pack up meals when i could not get to lunch) this day, as approached the mess room i saw a chap at the door looking towards Dog troop so i looked and it was on fire then suddenly it burst into a inferno so of course the lads went to the Fire Extinguisher several of then tried eventually they got moving they tried to shove it up this ramp it was too mich it run back and now the the ammunition got hot and Bullets were flying every where but the lads shoved that extingusher up the Hill to wards the fire not one of us took any notice of the Bullets flying around then,they opened the tap on the extinguisher it went PLOP SPLUTT nothing then we took a breather and looked at the tent well there wasnt one the fire was out an occasional bang from a round going off and you know what we all said ff it and went back to dinner several days later the war ended
RE: Bob you should put all these in a book yes wish i new how did i ever tell you of the time,taking a load of sand bags remeber i had a ten tonner leyland hippo i had 6 Korean labourers one in the cab(me sargy) 5 on the back of the wagon up a very steep hill, i missed a gear no brakes without any revs i had to loose my revs to get backin gear i could do nothing i said ,to Sargy Bags under wheels, i repeated it ,he suddenly cottoned on and they put bags un der the wheels i eased the revs the bags helsd me ond off i went up the Hill and i mean steep Long stop hill it was called i got away with it wowe
RE: reminds me of the day on stainborough low yes an absolute icy day on the Low i had come thro thurgolland on Stocksbridge Circ going down stainborugh ow and me Bus turned into a sledge nothing i could do i was in low gear no good using brakes and we were off,a tracky sledge when suddenly i hit a gritted bit of road and the gear held us and no one on the Bus knew a thing about it
its a steep hill that Bob done the same thing in my old Sierra, only there was no grit and I carried on down until I hit the side of the road.
